Schoeps STEREO SET 14G Overview

The matte gray Schoeps Colette CMC 1 Microphone Amp and MK 4 Cardioid Condenser Capsule (Stereo Set) is a matched pair of space-saving Colette Series modular cardioid condenser microphones designed to provide frequency-independent directionality and transparent, low-distortion sound pickup of dialog, foley, and instruments in film, television, and music production.

It includes two CMC 1 miniature microphone amplifiers, two MK 4 cardioid condenser capsules, two foam windscreens, two stand clamps, and a premium case, making it ideal for a range of stereo miking configurations. Thanks to the inclusion of the ultracompact CMC 1, this bundle serves as a lighter and smaller alternative to the CMC 6 without compromising sonic performance.

CMC 1 Miniature Colette Microphone Amplifier
The CMC 1 is a miniature Colette Series microphone amplifier offering uncompromising high fidelity in a lightweight and ultracompact form factor for studio recording, broadcast, and live stage applications. Presented as an alternative to the renowned Schoeps CMC 6 amplifier, the CMC 1 is compatible with all existing MK mic capsules and Colette active accessories (available separately).

It features a balanced XLR output, compliance with 12 or 48V phantom power, and low current consumption. Its Schoeps RFI Shield provides high immunity from RF interference for a clean, low-noise signal. The CMC 1 supports the high maximum SPLs tolerated by the various MK mic capsules.

  • Complete alternative to the renowned CMC 6 amplifier
  • Can be used in place of the CMC 6 with no compromise
  • Electrical characteristics of the CMC 1 are equal to, or even better than, those of the CMC 6
  • 1.4" long (about a third the size of the CMC 6)
  • 1.3 ounces (about 40% lighter than the CMC 6)
  • Fully compatible with all existing MK capsules and Colette active accessories such as the CUT 60 and RC tubes
  • Very-high immunity from RF interference with the Schoeps RFI Shield
  • Includes mic clip for easy attachment to a mic stand
  • Suspension mounts such as the Rycote INV-6 are available separately
MK 4 Cardioid Capsule
The MK 4 is part of the Colette series of modular capsules designed for use with the CMC preamplifiers. The cardioid polar pattern results in maximum rejection of rear incidental audio signal, eliminating off-axis noise and feedback. The cardioid pattern allows microphone placement to occur farther from the sound source than a pressure transducer of equivalent sensitivity. The MK 4 is ideal for both speech and music capturing, resulting in rich detail without coloration. The MK 4 is also a viable solution for X/Y or Mid-Side stereo recording.

Its flat frequency response and the constancy of its directional pattern for all frequencies are the basis of the MK 4’s sound quality. Even in the diffuse sound field, its frequency response is flat, with a slight increase at 10 kHz compensating for high-frequency losses in the room.

  • Cardioid polar pattern effectively rejects rear and off-axis audio signal, resulting in greater signal-to-noise ratio and feedback rejection
  • Excellent directional response allows the MK 4 to be placed at further proximities from the signal source without degradation
  • Wide, linear frequency response ensures accurate detail regardless of the source signal
B 5 D Pop Shield
The B 5 D is the classic and most popular pop shield from Schoeps. It is used in close-up speech, but also as a shield against mild wind or moving noise on the boom. It delivers good effectiveness with the lowest possible sound influence.

It is made of foam, but is hollow inside, and thus encloses an air volume around the microphone capsule like a windscreen basket. The foam of the B 5 D is mounted on a plastic carrier that sits firmly on the microphone. The foam thus does not touch the microphone, which reliably prevents any motion noise. The microphone should be pushed as far as possible into the B 5 D. Compatible with all axially addressed microphones from Schoeps.

Schoeps STEREO SET 14G Reviews

Just Perfect

Owning a pair of Schoeps has been a decades-long aspiration. After hearing so many exceptional recordings made with these microphones, I long daydreamed of that creamy, rich, sumptuous and detailed sound, imagining how such-and-such might be better set up and the sound vastly improved if only I had those German Dream Microphones. That is almost always a prelude to disappointment, but not so with these Schoeps. They were every bit the sound I dreamed of and better. I can't think of an instrument or voice where these wouldn't be my first-choice option. They manage to be both extremely natural and subtly flattering at the same time. For string instruments (violin, viola, cello), plucked instruments (guitar, theorbo), percussion (piano, overheads), or as a main pair, you really can't do better. After two years using the CMC 1 bodies, I've ended up with stereo pairs of the MK 4 and MK 21 capsules. They're both exceptionally beautiful and share the same character of sound, but have slightly different use scenarios. For anything in a studio-like environment, as a main pair with standard techniques, or where room reflections should be minimized, the MK 4 is the capsule of choice. I would advise anyone new to Schoeps to make this your first pick. For times you have a really nice natural acoustic, the MK 21 are really lovely. Some have called these their favorite capsules, but practically speaking they're just an MK 4 with a little extra air and space around the sound. That can be the something extra that really makes a recording, or the thing that makes it lose definition, depending on the instrument and space. You'll likely want and will fall in love these capsules, but they don't have the same range of usefulness that the MK 4 does. Schoeps are expensive as microphones go, but are certainly not expensive for what they are. It's a rare pleasure to use a tool that offers no compromises in terms of manufacturing quality, versatility, ease of use, or quality of sound, and also manages to be exceptionally small, efficient and reasonably affordable. They are tools you can use for a whole career, even exclusively, with the promise of a manufacturer that stands behind and supports their product over multiple decades. There are no drawbacks with these mics, and I'd be happy using only Schoeps for the rest of my career. I absolutely love them.
