will this strap attach to a Nikon D5300? will it hold a heavy body and lens?

The strap will fit fine and will certainly support the weight. It's the strap I use for my Leicas and my Fuji X cameras, but for my Nikon F6 which is quite a bit heavier I prefer the 1-1/2 wide version of the same strap.
