M-Audio M-Track Duo Overview

Designed for musicians, producers, and songwriters in pursuit of quality recordings and fresh sounds on a scaled-down budget, the M-Audio M-Track Duo desktop 2x2 USB audio interface provides two channels of transparent preamps and converters, easy operability, and a helpful software bundle of DAWs, virtual instruments, and plug-ins.

With its two XLR-1/4" combo mic/line/instrument inputs, the M-Track Duo can simultaneously accommodate two mics (dynamic/condenser), two electric guitars, or one of each while offering separate signal indicators and gain controls for both inputs. Since the interface has two 1/4" TRS monitor outputs and a 1/4" headphone output, each with their own level controls, you can connect active speakers and a set of headphones and adjust their volumes independently. The built-in direct monitor function lets you hear the zero-latency live input signal in mono or stereo, or monitor the USB return signal from your computer, so you can smoothly transition from tracking, to overdubbing, to mixing.

Crystal Clear Audio in a Compact Design
The M-Track Duo delivers 48 kHz audio resolution in a compact and easy-to-use format that is ideal for creating music on any Mac/Windows computer or iOS mobile device. This versatile interface works great for recording any type of sound source and features two Combo Crystal Preamps with phantom power, making it compatible with any microphone. Plus, there is a dedicated switch to choose between line-level or instrument-level input, perfect for connecting digital pianos, drum machines, or any other stereo 1/4" line-level device, as well as accommodating DI guitar or bass.
Direct Monitoring and Headphone Connection
M-Track Duo offers zero-latency monitoring of the mic, line, or instrument input signal through both the main stereo 1/4" outputs and the stereo 1/4" headphone output. The USB/Direct switch adjusts the balance between the direct inputs and the playback from your computer software. This makes it easy to record new parts or add parts to an existing composition.
Crystal Preamps and Clear A/D Converters
M-Audio's engineers designed their Crystal preamps to provide you with a transparent low-noise preamp that optimal sound from your microphones and captures your performance exactly the way you intended. The M-Track duo incorporates pristine A/D converters for 24-bit / 48 kHz resolution digital audio with a dynamic range that let you capture every nuance and subtlety of the performance.
Bus Powered
M-track Duo is completely powered by USB, which makes it portable and perfect for anyone. Throw it into your bag, grab a laptop, and create your next podcast, song, or mix, anywhere you want. The interface is class-compliant for Macs and utilizes a downloadable driver for Windows.

The power available from an iOS device is not sufficient to power M-Track Duo. Use an Apple Camera Connection Kit, a USB breakout cable, and a USB power adapter (all available separately) to properly connect and power the M-Track Duo with an iPhone or iPad.

Creative Software Suite
To help you start recording as soon as possible, the M-Track Duo comes complete with a software package—two DAWs, 20 effect plug-ins, a virtual instrument, and more.
  • Pro Tools | First M-Audio Edition and MPC Beats: Two DAWs that make it easy and fun to create professional-sounding podcasts and music or competitive beat productions on any Mac or Windows computer
  • Eleven Lite: Guitar amp simulator with modern and vintage amps and cabs
  • AVID Effects Collection: 20 effects including compression, delay, reverb, and more
  • AIR Music XPand!2: A multitimbral synthesizer plug-in for creating synths, strings, percussion, organ, piano sounds, and more with ease

M-Audio M-Track Duo Reviews

Great control options and layout, terrible drivers

I really wanted to love this thing. The IO is quite good, and the many physical options for control are a huge reason I gave it a shot for over a year. Everything falls apart when you get to the drivers. Focusrite might be overpriced, but at least the solo I replaced this thing with doesn't crackle and pop as soon as you actually try to use the ASIO driver on Windows. I have tried everything from changing the buffer to the bit rate and nothing worked. I plugged in the focusrite, installed it's drivers, and it works great. Resolve, Premiere, and Ableton all had problems with this thing across multiple computers. Maybe mine is faulty, but I suspect the software is half baked. 3 stars since the mic preamps actually sound decent, and I like the independent knob for headphone control. Everything else was a nightmare software wise.

Stay Away !!!!!!

This unit is very inexpensive but its way overpriced. First of all, the first one I received worked for 5 minutes before the audio lights both came on red(overload). Mind you no mikes were plugged in, and a loud buzz in the headphones. I sent it back for a replacement and received one. It worked for about 30 minutes before it did the same thing but even when it worked it was poor, leakage between in and out, turning the input up too far,it goes into oscillation with or without a mike plugged in. Its really a piece of crap. I bought a different brand and it has been working fine. Don't waste money, its NO GOOD.

Does the green signal/clip indicator LED glow from dim to bright as the signal level increases?
Asked by: DanM
The LED will light up green when an input signal is recognized, and red if the signallevel is too high which may cause distortion or “clipping”. THe green level does not change from dim to bright.

If I supply 5V USB power will the preamps operate with a mic or guitar signal and the 1/4" output works? Or Is this like the TC-Helicon GO TWIN that can't do anything at all without a computer connected? That interface won't even turn on without a computer connected.
Asked by: David
The M-Audio M-Track Duo Desktop 2x2 USB Audio Interface is bus powered via USB and it can be used with iOS devices when used with an Apple Camera Connection Kit, a USB breakout cable, and a USB power adapter. Connection to a computer is not required.
