Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Overview

The Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Lens with UV Filter Kit from B&H bundles the slightly longer than normal, exceedingly fast prime lens with an 82mm multicoated UV filter to absorb ultraviolet light and protect the front of the lens.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Lens

The Noct is back and faster than ever with the Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct. Made possible by the wider design of the Z mount, this renowned and unique lens has returned with an updated design specifically for the Z-series of mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its advanced optical design and exceedingly bright f/0.95 maximum aperture, this lens excels in low-light conditions and also affords extreme control over depth of field for isolating subject matter. Like its Noct predecessor, this lens has a manual focus design for fine-tuned control that makes it suitable for both photo and video applications. Its optical design incorporates a large-diameter ground aspherical element, which reduces spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness and accurate rendering. An ARNEO coat, along with a Nano Crystal Coat and fluorine coat, has also been applied to individual elements to greatly suppress flare and ghosting for clean, color-accurate imagery when working in strong lighting conditions.

Balancing its optical merits, the new Noct has also been updated with an assignable Fn button for lens-based control over shooting settings. A top lens information panel is also incorporated, which allows you to quickly confirm aperture, focus distance, and depth of field settings. Also, like other S-series Z-mount lenses, there is a programmable control ring that can be set for intuitive adjustment over either aperture or exposure compensation.

Slightly longer-than-normal prime is designed for FX-format Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras, however is also compatible with DX models where it provides an 87mm equivalent focal length.
Exceedingly fast f/0.95 maximum aperture achieves an impressively shallow depth of field for dramatic selective focus effects and also benefits working in very low-light conditions.
Four extra-low dispersion elements greatly reduce color fringing and chromatic aberrations in order to produce greater clarity and color rendering.
Three aspherical elements, including one large-diameter ground aspherical element, are used to greatly reduce spherical aberrations and distortion in order to achieve high sharpness, clarity, and accurate rendering. Additionally, the optical design has also been optimized for shooting at wider apertures and minimizes comatic aberrations and ensures even sharpness across the frame.
ARNEO and Nano Crystal Coats are used to prevent ghosting, reflections, and flare in order to realize improved contrast and clarity when working in strong lighting and backlit conditions. The Nano Crystal Coat controls incidental light from a diagonal direction while the ARNEO Coat controls incidental light from a vertical direction. A Super Integrated Coating is also featured, to help ensure consistently accurate colors, as well as a fluorine coating, to repel dust, dirt, and moisture.
Manual focus design permits working with subjects as close as 1.6' away. Focusing operations is benefitted by an OLED information panel on the top of the lens, which displays focus distance, depth of field, and aperture setting information to help recognize lens settings and hyperfocal distances quickly and easily.
Programmable Control Ring is, by default, set to adjust aperture settings, but can also be used to control exposure compensation settings.
Assignable L.Fn button works in conjunction with camera-based Fn buttons to provide a seamless point for quickly changing exposure settings and other functions.
Specialized electromagnetic aperture mechanism provides greater exposure control stability that is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.
An 11-blade diaphragm contributes to a distinctly smooth bokeh quality that helps to emphasize separation and depth between your subject and background.
Rotating tripod collar provides greater stability when working with this lens atop a tripod or monopod.

Chiaro Pro 82mm 98-UVATS UV Filter

The Pro 82mm 98-UVATS UV Filter is one of Chiaro’s highest-rated protective UV filters with 98% light transmission. It’s ideal for photographers of all levels who demand high-quality glass and other essential features for excellent image fidelity and construction.

To achieve 98% light transmission, Chiaro uses highly-polished optical glass, multi-coating, and additional advanced elements that improve the filter’s light transmission. A scratch-resistant coating minimizes scratching of the glass and helps assure that water, oil, dust, and fingerprints are removed with a gentle wipe. Its hard-anodized aluminum filter ring is designed to screw on and off effortlessly, and it is thin to prevent vignetting when used with wide-angle lenses. Side knurling helps assure that you’ll have a firm grip when attaching or removing your filter.

Image quality is what matters most at Chiaro. The company has tested and combined many features and essentials to achieve superior image quality and the highest light transmission. To help take the confusion out of selecting a filter, Chiaro prominently displays the light transmission levels so that you can choose the perfect filter for your lens and photo session.

98% Light Transmission
Protecting your lens doesn't mean you have to lose optical quality. By using highly-polished optical glass and advanced coatings, Chiaro offers a 98% transmission rate, which is an excellent transmission rate for glass. And the company verifies the ratings with ISO certified lab testing.
Resistance Coating
The layers of advanced resistance coating on the filter are designed to resist moderate scratches, and allow you to easily clean your filter. Water beads up and rolls off your filter, and oil and fingerprints can come off with a gentle wipe. Dust and debris won't adhere to the filter and can be removed with a puff of air.
Polished Optical Glass
Glass that's polished to perfection is essential to achieve a high level of light transmission. The optical glass in this Chiaro filter is highly-polished for flatness that ensures excellent optical clarity.
Multi-Coating
Multi-coating enhances light transmission to the demanding level set for all Chiaro filters. It reduces unwanted internal reflections and ghosting that can compromise your images.
UV Protection
The filter blocks UV light and reduces the bluish cast of daylight that can affect color accuracy, especially at higher altitudes.
Hard Anodized Aluminum Construction
The process of hard anodizing toughens and strengthens the aluminum for a lightweight yet durable filter ring.
Slim Design
Measuring only 3.2mm, this filter is slim enough to use on wide-angle lenses without experiencing vignetting.
Top and Side Knurling
In addition to top knurling, Chiaro added side knurling to better grip the filter when you're attaching and removing it, or when you're stacking filters.
Secure Attachment
It takes two full turns to mount the filter on your lens. This feature will securely hold your Chiaro filter through the most demanding photo shoots.
Front Threads
The front threads on the filter allow you to stack filters by screwing them onto your Chiaro filter.

Nikon NIKKOR Z 58mm f/0.95 S Noct Reviews

Absolutely Phenomenal

I've been using this lens for several months now. It is extraordinary and has made my other lenses seem rather underwhelming. I primarily use it on a z9 but also carry it over to a z7ii. Both cameras produce incredibly sharp, stunning images. I can shoot in A mode and have automated shutter speeds WELL beyond the reach of most cameras with an ISO at 100 on the Z9. It is also exceptional in low light. If you have the funds, it is money well spent.

The King of Nikkor lenses

You really have to try it, and with focus peaking your success rate goes up much higher.

Expensive, but I don't regret buying it.

It is not my favorite focal length, but its qualities have made me exercise more and expand my horizons. I’ve been using it for a year now. The results are extremely satisfying for the quality of sharpness and bokeh. It's a beauty. Very difficult to focus, but the Z6's focus aids like peaking highlights solve this, and you have to have a very steady hand, because your breathing already changes the focus. I hardly use a tripod, so I have to be careful. The quality of the construction is impressive, one of the best I've seen on a Nikkor and the electronic viewfinder and Noct logo are very elegant. The lens is not huge (it is for a 58mm!) but it weighs 2 kg! It seems to be made of lead! I don't know why the glass has such high specific weight. I need to move around a lot to photograph (one of the reasons I hate tripods) and the weight of it gets in the way. I don't trust the camera strap, so I use a Blackrapid connected to the lens tripod support (thankfully it has) to get around and even so I support the set inside a small Lowepro bag so it doesn't get hitting my leg. Special logistics for the use of the lens. Lastly: if you want to use f / 0.95, stay in the shadows or use a neutral density filter.

I expected excellence. What I got was enslavement. You do not own this lens. It owns you, It really is hard to shoot with other lenses after experiencing this. The image quality is just indescribable. It is manual focus, yes...but it is so easy to focus on static subjects and I can get adequate focus on moving subjects with focus peaking in the excellent EVF of my z5. Once you get used to it, hand holding is not too bad and compared to my Nikkor 200mm f/2 VR2 (which I am used to hand holding on an F5), it is a mere child. It is large but what professional mirrorless or SLR lenses are not these days. I have not had anyone stop and ask me about it like my Rolleiflex or my film Leica M cameras. It just melds into the background like a typical 24 to 70 or 70 to 200 zoom. This lens is one of those products of a lifetime. I am so happy I had the courage to spring for it.

I just look at it from time to time.

I don't actually know what to do with this beauty, perhaps if I can ever get my hands on a body for it I will do more than just hold it up to my eye while I look at my dog. Until then, at least it makes me self esteem go up.

for portraits shot handheld f.95 indoor in ambient lighting would the shooter use bracketing to nail the focus?
Asked by: Joseph
Critically focusing this lens is no different than doing the same on an 85mm f/1.2 (handheld, tripod or camera stand doesn't matter) when shooting wide open and focusing on a small emphasized critical areas (e.g. eyes, eye lashes, lips). It's actually very common to resort to, or only use manual focus in many razor depth-of-field situations autofocus takes too long to (or doesn't know exactly what you want to focus on, e.g. eyes or eye lashes) achieve such minute focus; so slowly racking the focus ring across the intended focus area coupled with a 1 second burst usually does the trick, especially when shooting for pay under limited time constraints (the long focus throw many manual focus lenses aids in this respect - a shorter throw would be ridiculously awful for minute focusing, which is the entire point of a long throw). This (very fine focusing) is common place, It's neither rocket science nor extremely hard to do. Even at f/0.95, when standing at full-body distances from the subject, the thin depth-of-field isn't so thin that getting focus proves a particularly hard feat. Manual focus skills are something that generally have to be learned, and with experience one can focus confidently with relative ease.. even at f/.095 Also when shooting video, I'm not usually concerned with autofocus irrespective of what lens I'm using - manual focusing for video is commonplace. The issue isn't the ultra thin depth of field as much as it is a deficit in manual focusing skills by photographers who are out of their element doing so.

This lens would work perfectly well on both the Z50 that is a DX apsc camera or on the Z7 that is an FX full frame camera.
