APC 1500VA Overview

This Smart-UPS X features an output of 1350W / 1500 VA, a nominal input of 120V @ 50/60 Hz ±3 Hz, and an input voltage range of 82-143V that may be adjusted to 75-154V, eight NEMA 5-15R battery backup outlets, an 8.01' NEMA 5-15P input connection, a surge energy rating of 645 joules, line interactive topology, and a sine waveform output. Included PowerChute Network Shutdown management software helps to provide unattended, yet proper shutdowns of network operating systems, and also included is an Ethernet cable, rack-mounting hardware, rack-mounting support rails, removable support feet, an RS-232 cable, and a USB cable. Support is provided by a limited 3-year repair or replace warranty and a limited lifetime $150,000 equipment protection policy.

The APC SmartConnect ports allow the run time of this unit to be extended. When using five SMX48RMBP2U external battery packs, this UPS can last for over 2 hours at 1200W. You'll also be able to view the status of your UPS through a secure web portal. Through this remote management interface, you'll receive automatic notifications, firmware updates, and advanced support.

Good Hardware limited by Paywalls and Bugs

This UPS features the useless Smartconnect feature; you get a free trial period, then you are expected to pay a subscription fee. You can choose to use the free tier which only allows viewing of status, no notifications of issues. This, however, is unreliable, and the cloud environment is often down or fails entirely. Therefore, your management options are: 1) a 400 dollar network card for local monitoring (with subscription firmware updates), 2) pay for Smartconnect subscription, 3) USB/serial monitoring to a third-party device, 4) no remote monitoring. For a device such as a UPS, it is crazy how APC hides all useful features behind a paywall, or cripples the service. If you are considering this UPS for remote features, look elsewhere. Hardware-wise, this device is fine.

State of the art hardware, not so for the software

Hardware is fine, the PowerChute Serial Shutdown software that is on one's own computer, not in the cloud, times out very quickly from inactivity and does not remain open requiring the user to constantly keep signing in. There apparently is no setting to keep the application open as you would any email client application or any other important application. That is just poor programming.

Yes you can as connecting the APC Smart-UPS X Battery Backup & Surge Protector with SmartConnect (BH #APSMX15RM2UC) to the Internet/network is not a requirement - it is optional.
