General Features
Updated Design for Power and Performance
ThunderBay 4, OWC's flagship 4-bay RAID powerhouse is bigger and faster than before. Now with the performance of Thunderbolt 3 up to 1550 MB/s sustained performance, it's a workhorse external storage solution. Not only faster, the ThunderBay 4 is now natively compatible with both 2.5" and 3.5" drives, and with a redesigned chassis, it's even cooler and quieter too.
Edit, Experiment, Create, Design
Designed with performance in mind and engineered to harness the power of Thunderbolt 3, the ThunderBay 4 is an incredibly flexible external solution with the throughput to support multi-stream compressed 4K video and other bandwidth-intensive operations. The ThunderBay 4 is highly configurable to match your performance needs. Choose between traditional hard drives or solid-state drives. Use each drive independently, or in the RAID configuration of your choice for the optimal balance of performance and data redundancy. Get the most out of your storage, take the brakes off your workflow, and do more with a ThunderBay 4.
Certified and Tested
Each ThunderBay 4 solution undergoes OWC's multi-hour drive "burn-in" performance certification procedure prior to shipping. This ensures your ThunderBay 4 arrives operating properly, ready for demanding use.
Time-Tested Cooling
Built on OWC's time-tested enclosure cooling technology, ThunderBay 4 utilizes an open "flow-thru" vented design with an oversized 92mm, low-turbulence, noise-quieting fan to keep the drives running cool and reliably.
Multi-Drive
Daisy-chain up to six ThunderBay 4 enclosures for massive storage capabilities and increased performance, or connect multiple ThunderBay 4 enclosures to multiple Thunderbolt 3 ports to achieve exponential speed capabilities.
Vibration Dampened
The ThunderBay 4's drive-isolating design reduces sonic resonance, and is aided by over-sized, rugged, vibration-absorbing, non-skid feet.
DisplayPort 1.2 Support
Dual Thunderbolt 3 ports let you connect the display of your choice that your computer can support, including 4K displays.
OWC Thunderbolt 3 Cable
The ThunderBay 4 comes with a certified OWC Thunderbolt 3 cable.

OWC ThunderBay 4 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Enclosure Review

I just got my new OWC ThunderBay 4 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Enclosure and really like it. It's seems pretty quiet overall. For now I'm just using it as JBOD, (Just a bunch of hard drives), Once I add two more to the four bay enclosure I'll use OWC Soft raid software and use RAID 1, or 5 for safety. I also have Sabrent Hard Drive enclosure but these are only JBOD. The only thing I miss is the ability to turn on and off other drives in the enclosure. When on, all drives will show up on my desktop unlike the Sabrent Enclosure which allows me to turn on only the drives I need at the time. With that said OWC does make very good products, I also have an 8TB SSD Thunderbolt and OWC Express SSD 4TB drive. Inside the OWC I'm running SeaWolf NSA 12 TB Pro drives...

It's great - ignore the negative reviews

Several reviews complain about the software. But I bought the version with SoftRaid (the basic version), and it works just fine – meets all my needs, no extra fees. If you choose to upgrade to their premium version, then it is a subscription. Others complain about the fan noise. I was expecting something really bad, like the screaming fans used in server racks – and fully expecting to replace the fan… But, it is fine. I put it on the carpeted floor beneath my desk, and I can barely hear it – just a soft white noise. With 7200 RPM drives spinning, the vibration transmitted to my wood desk is about the same as the fan noise, but on the carpeted floor – can’t hear the drives at all. I filled it with 4x 8TB Seagate IronWolf 3.5” drives. It powered-up and worked immediately. I downloaded and installed the SoftRaid software to my macbook pro, followed the two simple steps to initialize the disks, then create the RAID5 array. It took less than 10 minutes. Works perfectly, no problems. I measured the speed, and got about 650 MBystes/sec write, 700 Mbytes/sec read. The hardware is very sturdy, everything fits together properly. I’m now using it as a 24 TB RAID 5 DAS for my macbook pro – and I love it! Previous model I tried (Buffalo) was DOA – damaged in shipment. This one arrived as a separate cabinet, with the 4 drives individually packaged. Plus, the drive mounts are metal on the OWC, whereas the Buffalo was all plastic latches (that all broke). My only wish is that the supplied Thunderbolt cable were longer – this one is only a 2-footer. Highly recommended!

I purchased one of these units - along with 4x16TB 3.5inch drives, and am running this in Raid 5. I have filled up the drives and just wandering - Can I purchase 4 new drives and set it up as a fresh Raid-5, but still have the option in the future to plug back in my old drives and access the data? Will the enclosure recognise previously created volumes?
Asked by: Caleb
In order to create a new RAID setup with the OWC ThunderBay 4 4-Bay Thunderbolt 3 RAID Enclosure, you will need to purchase the SoftRAID XT software from OWC. That will allow you to have a new RAID setup. But when you put in the old drives, the enclosure will recognize the old drives. Make sure that you number the drives and input them in the same bay as removed.

Asked by: Max
Once configured in a RAID array, drives should not be removed from the enclosure unless absolutely necessary. Changing the order of drives or removing functioning drives while the enclosure is active could damage the array and cause data loss.
