B+W 49mm MRC Basic Circular Polarizing Filter
Key Features
  • Circular Polarizer Filter
  • For Use with Autofocus Cameras
  • 2 to 2.8x Filter Factor, +1 to 1.5 Stops
  • Helps Eliminate Reflections and Glare
This 49mm MRC Basic Circular Polarizing Filter from B+W reduces reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. Light from the sun naturally becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing it to scatter into what appears as haze. A polarizing filter arranges this directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of this light. This results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from non-metallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage. Objects and people behind surfaces such as shop windows and car windshields become visible again, a fascinating image enhancement without the need for image processing in post production.

B+W MRC Basic filters are equipped with the exclusive Multi-Resistant Coating (MRC) nano premium coating technology. This high-quality broadband coating is applied on both sides and enhances the optical imaging properties, allowing uniform and increased transmittance across the entire light spectrum to be achieved, with minimal physically induced remaining reflection. The nano all-round protection on the filter glass also ensures increased scratch resistance as well as extremely fast and easy cleaning for a long filter life.

B+W MRC Basic Circular Polarizer Reviews

Difficult to Install and Remov

The base ring that one must grip to install or remove this filter is too small compared to the size of the rotating outer ring. Its almost impossible to install or remove this filter without special tools.

Better Than B+W Nano

Bought the B+W 72mm MRC Basic Circular Polarizing Filter for my Fujifilm 50-140mm f/2.8 lens. Doesn't vignette. The dial on the B+W Basic Circular Polarizer is easier to turn than the B+W Nano. This might sound funny but I like that the B+W Circular Polarizers add a slight blue colour cast. Makes landscape photography of trees set against a blue sky add a contrast pop! If you want no colour cast get the Hoya HD3 Polarizer. The Hoya HD3 is slim and the dial is easier to turn than the B+W Nano. Polar Pro also makes good Polarizers. Breakthrough as well. For the price the B+W Basic Circular Polarizing Filter wins! Buy a Sensei Pro Step-Up Ring from B&H to store your polarizer in. The case has a foam cut out for the exact filter size. Avoid Tiffen Polarizers.

Difference between this polarizer and the high transmission version?
Asked by: R
B+W High-Transmission MRC-Nano Master Circular Polarizer Filter has the nano coating that beads water and makes it easier to clean and also protects the filter against scratches. The basic filter does not have that. The high transmission filter also allows more light to reach the camera than the basic version. The high transmission polarizer filter is also equipped with a grease-free rotating device for smoother rotation.

Are B+W polarizing filters water resistant? Can I use them in the surf? Will salt water damage them?
Asked by: Dirk
The B+W MRC Basic CPL filter does not have a tremendous amount of water-resistance to them. With anything, we recommend rinsing off any salt/sand/sediments off your items and devices if doused in saltwater. For a more water-repellent filter, we'd recommend the B+W Master CPL which has enhanced water-beading nano-coatings. https://bhpho.to/3ynwlZc
