OWC Mini External HDD/SSD Reviews
Well Built Enclosure
My drive came out of a LaCie enclosure and the height was a mm too high for the enclosure to close smoothly. However with a slight modification I was able to get it to fit. It’s really well built and I love it has screws. Had bought a couple of cheap plastic ones from Amazon and I had to return them.
Functional, but Chintzy
I have used OWC products for a long time now, and have used quite a few different external enclosures over the years. This is fine, but not impressive. It does seem to be aluminum, but it is spray-painted silver, and rather unevenly. The mesh on the front is decorative, there is a solid plate behind it, with a hole drilled for the garishly bright blue LED. The light does turn off when the drive spins down. The PCB is no-name and appears to have a silastic coating wiped on with a finger. I can't see the controller chip but whatever it is, it does seem to work properly– speeds are as expected for the drive I put in it. The rubber feet it comes with are intended to stick on right over the screws, so obviously this is not designed to have the drive swapped over its lifespan. Overall, this is fine for the price, but nothing special, and the fit and finish is a disappointing showing from OWC– there's definitely nothing elite or pro about this.
