L Series Optics
  • Featuring an optical design based on past EF and RF super-telephoto lenses, this lens features top-range optics designed for the most demanding shooting applications.
  • Two fluorite, one Super Ultra Low-Dispersion (UD), and one UD element virtually eliminate chromatic aberrations for outstanding clarity and color accuracy, void of chromatic aberrations or fringing.
  • Advanced optical design also contributes to the sleeker, more portable form factor of this RF-mount, mirrorless lens.
  • Both Air Sphere and Super Spectra Coatings improve image quality by maintaining high contrast and color accuracy while reducing lens flare and ghosting when working in strong lighting conditions.
  • Rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth bokeh quality.
USM Autofocus and Image Stabilization
  • Ultrasonic Motor delivers fast, accurate, and near silent autofocus performance to benefit both photo and video applications.
  • Impressively close 8.5' minimum focusing distance, and a maximum magnification of 0.34x, suit working with nearby subjects, such as close-range wildlife, birds, and athletes.
  • Variable speed manual focusing offers three options for greater focusing control and full-time manual focus support permits making focus adjustments without switching modes.
  • Two focus presets can be stored for immediate recall to a specified focus distance.
  • Focus range limiter improves responsiveness by constraining the usable focusing range.
  • Benefitting handheld and monopod-based shooting, Optical Image Stabilization compensates for 4.5 stops of camera shake for sharper imagery. Due to the long focal length, in-body image stabilization, or Coordinated IS, from EOS R-series bodies is not supported with with this lens.
Intuitive Handling and Professional Reliability

  • Built-in rotating tripod mount suits working with the lens atop a monopod or tripod and enables quick switching between vertical and horizontal shooting orientations.
  • Weather-sealed design for reliable use in inclement conditions.
  • Fluorine coating on front element helps repel moisture, dust, and fingerprints and is also easier to clean.
  • Distinctive heat-resistant white paint finish.
  • Accepts drop-in style 52mm filters toward the rear of the lens.
  • Compatible with optional Extender RF 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for further extending the effective reach of this lens.

Canon RF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Reviews

Canon User for Life: A Wildlife Photographer’s Perspective

As a professional wildlife photographer with over three decades behind the lens, I’ve trusted Canon gear to perform in some of the most extreme and remote environments on Earth. From the sweeping savannas of Africa to the rugged peaks of the American West, Canon has never let me down. I purchased my first EF 800mm in 2016, and it became an essential part of my field kit. But over the past three years, I’ve transitioned all of my gear to Canon’s mirrorless platform—and the results have exceeded every expectation. The new RF 800mm paired with the EOS R5 Mark II is nothing short of exceptional. The clarity, speed, and reliability of this combination are unmatched. It delivers stunning detail, even in low light, and the autofocus tracking is a game-changer for wildlife subjects that never sit still. My current core setup includes two R5 bodies (soon to be upgraded), the R5 Mark II, and Canon’s finest L-series glass: the 24-70mm, 70-200mm, 100-500mm, and of course, the new RF 800mm. This lineup allows me to cover everything from intimate wide-angle landscapes to ultra-telephoto wildlife portraits—all with confidence and precision. Canon’s innovation, support, and commitment to professional image-makers is why I’ve stayed with them throughout my career. The mirrorless platform has taken my work to new heights, and I look forward to what’s next. Thank you, Canon, for continually raising the bar and delivering the tools that help me tell the wild stories that matter most. Thank you Canon!

Not so sharp as expected

Bought this lens for using it with my R5 . The lens is a disappointment when it comes to sharpness, especially considering the price. Comparing it with my Sony 600mm f.4 its far behind when it comes to sharpness. Had expected more from Canon. Now I'm using it mostly for video when the lack of sharpness isn't so visible.

Unfortunately, the Canon RF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM Lens does not have front threads so a filter cannot be screwed in.
