Sony ECM-44B Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone

The Sony ECM-44B Lavalier Microphone makes the exceptional quality of Sony's electret condenser microphones available for budget-conscious productions, and a variety of sound-reinforcement requirements, such as lectures and demonstrations. Measuring only 8.5 x 14.5mm, the ECM-44B reduces the visual distraction for the audience. The ECM-44B can be depended upon for clean, bright, yet natural reproduction. To maintain its low cost, this microphone operates on a single AA (does not accept phantom power) battery for over 5000 hours of service.

IK Multimedia iRig Pre 2 Ultracompact XLR Microphone Interface

Equipped with the IK Multimedia iRig Pre 2 Ultracompact XLR Microphone Interface, you can easily record your favorite dynamic or condenser microphone to a smartphone, tablet, camera, or computer while keeping your setup simple and small. The included AA batteries power the iRig Pre 2 for up to 20 hours, so you can knock out podcasts, vocal parts, interviews, or instrument performances no matter where you are.

Simply hook up any microphone to the XLR input (engage phantom power for condenser mics) and connect the 3.5mm TRRS mini plug on the attached 15.7" cable to your mobile device, DSLR camera, or laptop. The iRig Pre 2's auto-sensing output circuit ensures compatibility with TRRS headset ports and TRS mic inputs. Plus, the level-adjustable headphone out and switchable direct monitoring allow convenient real-time audio checks. Other enhancements over the original iRig Pre include a soft-touch exterior, numbered gain and headphone level dials, and larger LED indicators.

iRig Pre 2 vs iRig Pre
  • iRig Pre 2's new auto-sensing output circuit lets it connect to a mobile device's TRRS headset jack or to a DSLR camera's TRS mic input jack
  • iRig Pre 2 adds a stylish, soft-touch finish
  • Both the adjustable input gain and headphone output now offer numbered level controls for precise control
  • A new direct monitor switch lets you monitor the input signal directly, avoiding latency and letting you monitor in real time with any app or device
  • Two AA batteries (included) take the place of the previous 9V, providing power to the iRig Pre 2 as well as enabling +48V phantom power for condenser microphones
All Powered Up
iRig Pre 2's two AA batteries provide true +48V phantom power for around seven hours of continuous use—many other mobile micpreamps only offer 32V, degrading your mic's performance

To use your favorite dynamic or ribbon mic, simply turn off the phantom power, and you're good to go for even longer—up to 20 hours.

Don't Waste a Take
A time-saving 3.5mm headphone output now offers direct monitoring, so you can listen to ensure the signal is perfect before you start recording or streaming. It's ideal for today's popular livestreaming and video recording apps, so you can hop from app to app with confidence.

For DSLRs and digital cameras, it makes set up a snap without needing to dive into menus or set up alternate workarounds to monitor the sound.

Works in More Situations
You can easily access your favorite apps while recording or performing, by mounting the iRig Pre 2 to your mic stand or other convenient stage location using the included hook-and-loop strip slot. For secure mic stand mounting for your connected smartphone or tablet, check out the IK Multimedia iKlip series (available separately), which offers a choice of flexible mounting options for a variety of scenarios.
Ready for Recording
Even if you’re new to mobile audio and video creation, you can get started right away by simply downloading two free IK Multimedia apps from the App store or Google Play.

Sony ECM-44B Reviews

Extraordinary Lavalier Microphone

I used a Sony ECM-44B set of four microphones for the first time in 1995. Throughout the years I have tried other brands of lavalier microphones and no one compares to it. I have a few 20 years old units that still work. Although these are only entry level microphones in the Sony family, they are incredible reliable and super affordable. I use them daily, packing and unpacking them as I move from location to location and 30 years later, it is the only brand I use. I highly recommend this product.

question

Sound-wise would this be as good as a 77B? That is, if I don't need the smaller profile of the 77B would this 44B sound as good?
Asked by: Thomas
The main difference between the ECM 77B and 44B other than physical size, would be the frequency response. The 77B extends lower than the 44B, however generally for speech and broadcast applications those would be rolled off. If size is of no importance, the ECM 44B is a fine choice and very popular in broadcast applications.

How to connect Sony eco-44b to audio recorder
Asked by: Nicole M.
Hi Nicole, What audio recorder? The ECM-44B has a Male XLR connector. If the audio recorder has a female XLR port it will plug right in. If your recorder has a 3.5mm or inch input you will need an adapter:Hosa Technology Pro REAN XLR Female to 1/4 TS Hi-Z Microphone Cable - 10'https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/828155-REG/Hosa_Technology_HMIC_010HZ_HMIC_010HZ_Pro_Mic_Cable.htmlOrKopul XRSM 3-Pin XLR Female to 3.5mm RA Stereo Mini-Plug Cable (1.5')https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1221867-REG/kopul_xrsm_015b_xrsm_3_pin_xlr_female.htmlRegards, -Erin

Would the 44-b use the XLR-Line or the XLR-Mic audio setting on the camera?
Asked by: Brian
The ECM-44B is a microphone, so it outputs mic-level voltage. You would want to use the mic level setting on your camera or recording device.

Will this mic work with Scarlett Focusrite 2i2?
Asked by: Gary
Should be able to work. Make sure AA battery is installed in the XLR barrel. Remove battery when not in use do prevent the Lav from damages from acid leaks. It's a great lav to have and audio is great. Have 2 for talking heads.

question

To link this to a DSLR with a 3.5mm jack in a way that adds to the length of the cord, I could use a 20' Kopul Premium Performance 3000 Series XLR M to XLR F Microphone Cable, plus a Kopul LMT100 - Low to High Impedance Matching Transformer, correct? The length will not degrade the sound, and I can go right into the camera?
Asked by: Brian
Correct. A standard XLR mic cable in addition to the Kopul LMT-100 cable will allow you to connect the ECM-44B directly to a DSLR. At this length would not affect the audio quality.

Connecting with the Kopul Low to High Impedance Transformer should the camera use the 3.5mm LINE or 3.5mm MIC setting?
Asked by: Brian
When connecting the Sony ECM-44B Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone to a 3.5mm input on a camera using the Kopul LMT100 Low to High Impedance Matching Transformer (B&H # KOLMT100), set the camera's input level on the mic level setting.
