Sennheiser E965 Overview

This e 965 Handheld Condenser Microphone Kit with Tripod Boom Stand and Cable from B&H includes the black Sennheiser e 965 handheld microphone, a mic stand with a fixed boom, and a balanced 20' XLR mic cable.

Sennheiser e 965 Handheld Condenser Microphone

The Sennheiser e965 is large-diaphragm, handheld condenser microphone designed for vocal applications. It offers a 1" dual-diaphragm capsule that can give you both cardioid and supercardioid polar patterns. The highly directional nature of the supercardioid pattern is an effective deterrent against acoustic feedback onstage. The mic also offers a high-pass filter to eliminate rumble and a switchable -10 dB pad. With the pad engaged, the mic can handle a startling 152 dB SPL, which is truly loud. It captures frequencies between 40 Hz and 20 kHz. The mic, which requires phantom power to operate, includes a carrying pouch and a mic clip.

Key Features at a Glance
  • Switchable pickup pattern (cardioid / supercardioid)
  • Low-cut switch, which reduces ambient noise, rumble, and wind noise
  • Switchable pre-attenuation (-10 dB) accommodates singers with powerful voices
  • Capsule shockmount efficiently rejects handling noise for superbly clear sound
  • Excellent protection against moisture
  • Frequency response of 40 Hz to 20 kHz

Kopul Premium Performance 3000 Series Neutrik XLR Male to XLR Female Microphone Cable (20', Black)

The black Kopul Premium Performance 3000 Series XLR Male to XLR Female Microphone Cable (20') is designed to be an extremely quiet and flexible cable that is ideal for the most demanding live sound and performance applications. The cable is engineered to be durable and provide protection against EMI, RFI, and static noise. While the cable's color-coding affords the ability to quickly differentiate between multiple connections onstage, it provides a pleasant aesthetic quality at the same time.

Premium Performance 3000 Series cables are made from 24-AWG OFC copper wire that's wrapped with PE insulation and a conductive PVC inner shield. A cotton-yarn inner layer helps reduce electrostatic and microphonic noise. The 95% dual-spiral shielding makes the cable resistant to EMI and RFI noise. The Neutrik XX silver connectors provide a high level of connectivity, and all the solder connections are shrink-wrapped for protection.

95% dual-spiral shielding offers protection from EMI and RFI noise
Twin conductive PVC inner shielding provides 100% coverage of the core conductor. It helps keep the cable's signal from radiating and affecting nearby cables and helps prevents external EMI from penetrating to the cable's core
24-AWG oxygen-free stranded copper inner core provides the best possible conductivity
Cotton yarn reduces electrostatic and microphonic noise
All solder points shrink-wrapped for protection
Neutrik XX silver connectors offer high conductivity
Caged type contact and improved ground contact

When we tested this mic back in 2015, we felt that it exhibited too much popping -- too sensitive to wind/plosives. We didn't want to use a foam windscreen, which would have negated much of its otherwise beautiful sound. Has this been corrected at all?
Asked by: Paul
Thank you, John, for your comments. Armed with them, I corresponded with the Sennheiser Customer Support Team. According to their bench technician, "there have not been any changes to the filter or basket on the E 965". It would seem that the mic we tested in 2015 is pretty much identical to what would be available today. I guess I should have asked them directly, rather than plugging up a product comments section like this one -- sorry. We REALLY liked the sound of this mic back in 2015. It's clear, natural, unhyped, and beautiful, BUT I felt like I couldn't use the mic because of plosives & popping. If I must place a foam pop filter over the end of the mic for everyday stage use, then that will change the sound and it seems a disqualifier. Is there anyone reading this who uses the mic every day and who does not have an issue with popping? I'd LOVE to find a handheld condenser vocal mic which is not processed sounding like the Shure offerings.
