Sennheiser HD 800 S Dynamic Open-Back Stereo Headphones

An update on the well-regarded HD 800, the HD 800 S by Sennheiser comprises a pair of open-back headphones designed for use in studio situations, particularly when referencing between monitors and cans. Its 56mm transducer is housed in stainless steel, while its headband and mounting utilize industrial, aerospace-grade materials to emphasize durability at a relatively light weight of 11.6 oz. Sennheiser's proprietary sound absorber technology preserves the integrity of the highest of high ends by eliminating the "masking effect," a phenomenon in which the ear struggles to hear particularly bright signals when lower-frequency material occurs simultaneously at a louder volume. In reducing this masking effect, every nuance of the frequency spectrum is represented and made audible.

The design of its earcups directs sound to the ear at a subtle angle, thereby aiding in a realistic—and realistically stereo—monitoring experience. Additionally, there are two different possibilities for audio connection: a stereo 1/4" connector, and a 4.4mm balanced cable for connecting to balanced outputs, such as a headphone amplifier.

Key Features
  • Open-back, circumaural dynamic sound reproduction achieved through absorber technology
  • 4 Hz to 51 kHz frequency response
  • 300 Ohm impedance
  • Matte-black metal parts
  • Realistic and natural sound field with minimal resonance
  • Large transducers with finely crafted dynamic transducer design
  • Uncovered earcups for enhanced acoustics
  • Handcrafted ear pads made of microfiber fabric
  • Metal headband with an inner damping element
  • Tuned and balanced impedance-matching cable with low capacitance
  • High-precision headphone connectors

Grace Design m900 Compact, Portable Headphone Amp, DAC, and Preamp

The Grace Design m900 is a compact, portable headphone amplifier, DAC, and preamp, well suited for audio professionals, music enthusiasts, or anyone looking for transparent playback from USB, S/PDIF, or TOSLINK sources. For small DAW setups, the m900 provides the same analog and DAC quality as Grace Design's large monitor controllers, but in a rugged, portable, and surprisingly affordable unit.

The heart of the Grace Design m900 features the latest generation AKM 4490 chip, which includes 32-bit processing and support for sample rates up to 384 kHz or DSD256. The USB interface operates in asynchronous mode allowing the m900 to be the clock master, which makes the system immune to USB bus jitter. S/PDIF and TOSLINK inputs enhance any DAW interface with true reference-quality D/A conversion, headphone monitoring, and stereo speaker control.

The intelligent power supply design allows for two power operation modes, Low and High. Low power mode is derived from USB connection 1, which provides bus power along with data, allowing simple operation from a single connection to a computer. High power mode is available by connecting the included 2A USB DC power supply to USB connector 2, which provides additional power for high-impedance headphones.

The Grace Design m900 utilizes trans-impedance amplifier topology coupled to a zero-ohm output impedance driver for headphone performance that is spacious and transparent with a tight, enveloping low end, while the latest generation cross-feed circuit rounds out the design by emulating an acoustic listening environment in the headphones. The Grace Design m900 ships with a 2A USB power supply and two USB Type-B mini-cables (6' and 10'.)

  • USB, S/PDIF and TOSLINK digital inputs, supports up to 192 kHz (TOSLINK up to 96 kHz)
  • Asynchronous USB interface for jitter free computer audio playback, supports up to 384 kHz PCM and DSD256
  • Dual zero-ohm output impedance headphone outputs
  • Unbalanced level controlled outputs via RCA for connecting to a stereo monitor system
  • Compact, portable chassis perfect for travel, desktop or studio
  • Low power mode via USB Bus power
  • High power mode via included USB 2A power supply
  • Four different DAC filter settings to tailor playback performance to personal preference
  • Simple user setup menu for setup and calibration
  • Display: 7-segment LED displays level and setup menu information
  • Large rotary encoder for volume control and setup menu navigation
  • Made in the USA
  • 5-year transferable warranty

Expensive but worth every penny. At this price range you will be hard pressed to find a headphone with better dynamics and soundstage. B&H also did a great job with getting me these iconic phones in record time. Thanks

Great full range cans

Has been on my want list for a while so the sale on the package of amp and phones was too irresistible. I don't even have 50hrs on this setup and it sounds great. I have some nice cans and a Woo tube amp for reference and a Marantz SA11S2 disc spinner. Have never like solid state head amps till now. The 800S cans have some of the Senn house sound and not that different from the 600S but to use an oft used cliche, there is more there, there. Garbage in garbage out but with SACD's I have been listening to, the 800S sounds spectacular. Maybe a tad recessed in the mids but that could be remedied with some eq. All the bass is there but this is not a bass head can to be sure. I am running these balanced all the way. I do not like their 1/8 balanced plug cable that the 800S comes with. It also has 1/4 single ended cable. Never heard of an 1/8 balanced jack but the HDV820 has one. The 800S is a light and comfortable can with a sweet but full non fatiguing sound. And another cliche, I am hearing things I never heard before in recordings I know intimately. Highly recommended.

Originally, Sennheiser HD 800S were made in Germany. I heard the new production had moved out of Europe. Where are these made now?

I purchased an HD800S from B&H in Feb 2022. The top of the metal headband says "Made in Ireland." It is NOT made in Germany. Did I receive a counterfeit product? How can I check?

Curious some people say the HD 800 S does not include a balanced cable with XLR-4 connector when the Sennheiser manual states that it does and even shows a photo of it. What gives?
