Focal Clear MG Open-Back Headphones (Chestnut and Mixed Metal Finish)

Offering a stylish look, an eminently comfortable fit, and of course, a stellar sound, the Focal Clear MG are open-backed headphones designed for high-end critical listening in your home environment. Everything about these headphones—from their M-shaped magnesium dome drivers to their perforated microfiber earpads—has been engineered to elicit a premium performance. With their chestnut and mixed-metal finish on a honeycomb grille, they also look as stylish as they sound.

Tuned to provide a balanced sound, a wide soundstage, and a precise presentation of instrument, these headphones offer a 5 Hz to 28 kHz frequency response, with careful articulation in the low end for a more naturalistic bass sound. Multiple cables are included to suit both consumer devices and balanced headphone amps. A 3.5mm-to-1/4" adapter is supplied, as is a carrying case.

Comfort and Ergonomics
Perforated microfiber earpads allow for comfort throughout prolonged listening sessions.
A Form that Supports Function
An M-shaped honeycomb internal grille follows the curve of the cone to elicit a precise frequency delineation, particularly in the lows. The honeycomb shape of the design offers an especially open-back feel, so that you can forget you're even wearing headphones.
Balanced, Impactful Sound
Providing a remarkable tonal balance across the full spectrum, the Clear MG offers bass articulation down to the lowest frequencies as well as a precise range of dynamics and impact.
Handy Includes
2 cables are supplied to suit all uses, including one cable that terminates in 3.5mm connection and one that ends in a 4-pin XLR termination. A 1/4" adapter is also included, as is a carrying case.

Grace Design m900 Compact, Portable Headphone Amp, DAC, and Preamp

The Grace Design m900 is a compact, portable headphone amplifier, DAC, and preamp, well suited for audio professionals, music enthusiasts, or anyone looking for transparent playback from USB, S/PDIF, or TOSLINK sources. For small DAW setups, the m900 provides the same analog and DAC quality as Grace Design's large monitor controllers, but in a rugged, portable, and surprisingly affordable unit.

The heart of the Grace Design m900 features the latest generation AKM 4490 chip, which includes 32-bit processing and support for sample rates up to 384 kHz or DSD256. The USB interface operates in asynchronous mode allowing the m900 to be the clock master, which makes the system immune to USB bus jitter. S/PDIF and TOSLINK inputs enhance any DAW interface with true reference-quality D/A conversion, headphone monitoring, and stereo speaker control.

The intelligent power supply design allows for two power operation modes, Low and High. Low power mode is derived from USB connection 1, which provides bus power along with data, allowing simple operation from a single connection to a computer. High power mode is available by connecting the included 2A USB DC power supply to USB connector 2, which provides additional power for high-impedance headphones.

The Grace Design m900 utilizes trans-impedance amplifier topology coupled to a zero-ohm output impedance driver for headphone performance that is spacious and transparent with a tight, enveloping low end, while the latest generation cross-feed circuit rounds out the design by emulating an acoustic listening environment in the headphones. The Grace Design m900 ships with a 2A USB power supply and two USB Type-B mini-cables (6' and 10'.)

  • USB, S/PDIF and TOSLINK digital inputs, supports up to 192 kHz (TOSLINK up to 96 kHz)
  • Asynchronous USB interface for jitter free computer audio playback, supports up to 384 kHz PCM and DSD256
  • Dual zero-ohm output impedance headphone outputs
  • Unbalanced level controlled outputs via RCA for connecting to a stereo monitor system
  • Compact, portable chassis perfect for travel, desktop or studio
  • Low power mode via USB Bus power
  • High power mode via included USB 2A power supply
  • Four different DAC filter settings to tailor playback performance to personal preference
  • Simple user setup menu for setup and calibration
  • Display: 7-segment LED displays level and setup menu information

Focal Clear MG Reviews

Sound quality.

I have been looking over a pair of head earphones, for quite some time. My original Panasonic model had many issues when I attached it to my sound system, all I got was static, and moments where it would be very loud. I could never get the sound adjusted. With Focal Clear MG, the sound is there, not loud. When using these headphones with a mobile phone devise, you definitely need to get an amplifier, it’ll make listening even more enjoyable. In regards to the fit, my ears do not feel crushed when I put them on. Although, they look huge they’re actually quite comfortable. Perfect headphones ,for any kind of music you want to listen too.

Awesome sound, but needed to return =(

I had 3 days since new and the left driver started to make very loud crackling metallic noises when volume 50% and above. Something very stange happened to that driver, I suppose it was a defective unit. I'm in the middle of the return/exchange process, I hope the second unit comes better (perfect, I would assume for this price)... Very unlucky....

It is priced the same as the (black & Red) Clear MG "Professional" but this Chestnut colored one is NOT labelled "Professional". Is it a "Lower Standard Tool" than the professional (or was the person typing in the description negligent to the details)?
Asked by: Joseph
There is a bit of a sound difference. The MG Clear has a slightly more friendly, rounded sound while the Professional has a more analytical, unforgiving sound.

Does these headphones need a break in period , if so for how many hours does it need and how loud should you play them for the break in period to finish ?
Asked by: Michael
Here is the information that the manufacturer provides in the user manual for the Focal Clear MG headphones regarding an initial break-in period: • These headphones require a running-in period in order to operate at their best. • They will run themselves in naturally after several hours of listening time. • If you want to speed up the process, we recommend playing very bassy music through them for at least 24 hours at a relatively high volume. • This will stabilize the speaker drivers and allow you to get the very best out of your headphones.
