Sennheiser ME4 Overview

The black Sennheiser ME 4 is a cardioid lavalier microphone designed for use with Sennheiser bodypack transmitters in interviews, conferencing, television, live stage, and presentation applications. Optimized for speech intelligibility, the mic offers a 50 Hz to 18 kHz frequency response and handles SPL levels up to 120 dB without distorting.

The mic's cardioid polar pattern minimizes pickup of off-axis sound and enhances feedback rejection when used with sound reinforcement equipment. The attached 5.2' cable is terminated with a locking 3.5mm TRS output connector for use with Sennheiser wireless transmitters and other compatible transmitters and devices. The ME 4 features an integrated protective grille and a mic clip is included for easy attachment to clothing. A foam windscreen is also provided to reduce breath and wind noise.

Sennheiser ME4 Reviews

As an audio novice, it's ok

I got this so I could record my teaching without worrying about my mic coming unplugged. The fact that it is cardioid also helps in an untreated classroom that I have to share with others. It sounds boxy on my voice, but I'm willing to make that tradeoff for the cardioid pattern. In post, it is easier to EQ than to remove echo. The product description says it needs 10 volts (at time of writing), I have been using it with 5 volts from the PR-2 for six months without issue. The back of the clip is very stubby, and hard to get a hold of. There are also prongs for holding the wire in place that you take off the clip when you want to move the mic around. Those prongs will very easily go flying when you take them off, so make sure you remove them carefully. I sometimes bring a tie clip to hold my mic in place instead so I don't have to deal with those prongs.

Sounds ok, terrible cable noise

The mic element sounds fine, but I've never heard such terrible cable noise. Every bump or rub against the cable translates right up to the mic element; even a loop doesn't help. Originally bought because I'm doing a repeat panelist event this year in a space with terrible acoustics and I thought a cardioid pattern would help fight feedback, but I'd rather deal with riding mic gains than the cable noise - that's how bad it is. Had to return them.

Will this Lav work with the HOLLYLAND LARK MAX?
Asked by: ENRIQUE
No, because of the locking thread on the connector for the Sennheiser ME4, this can interfere with the connection to the non-locking input, so they may not make a proper connection. You can use a mic like the Saramonic SR-M1 Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone Cable with 3.5mm TRS Connector (B&H # SASRM1) or the Shure MOTIV MVL Omnidirectional Lavalier Microphone (B&H # SHMVL35MM).

The manufacturer has not provided a specification for the signal to noise ratio of the Sennheiser ME 4 Cardioid Lavalier Microphone, but they have provided the equivalent noise level (self noise), which is rated at 31 dB.

Will this work with rode wireless go system?

Will this work with rode wireless go system?
Asked by: Walter
The Sennheiser ME 4 Cardiod Lavalier Microphone has a locking 3.5mm TRS connector and the mic input on the RODE Wireless GO II transmitter uses a standard, non-locking 3.5mm connector, so the mic will connect, but it will not latch to the input on the transmitter for a completely secure connection.

I'm looking to upgrade the lav mic on my BH #SABLINK500P2, would this be compatible powerwise?
Asked by: ben
No, the Sennheiser ME 4 Cardioid Lavalier Microphone with Locking 3.5mm Connector is not compatible for use with the input on the transmitter for the Saramonic Blink 500 Pro B2 2-Person Digital Camera-Mount Wireless Omni Lavalier Microphone System. The ME 4 has a locking connector and the transmitter has a standard non-locking input. The power rating is not the problem - the locking connector on the mic is the problem.

Is this adequate for live singing in a nightclub ...

Is this adequate for live singing in a nightclub environment?
Asked by: Max
I might not typically recommend a lavalier for use in this type of scenario (usually a low-profile earset mic would be preferable), but the Sennheiser ME 4's cardioid pickup pattern means that it will perform better in noisy environments than most omnidirectional lavaliers. If it is a choice between this and an omni lav, I would probably go with this. If an earset like BH #SEUE15535HBE is an option however, I would go with the earset. In noisy environments, the closer you can get the mic to your mouth the less background noise and feedback will be an issue.
