Sennheiser Combo SET Overview

The ultracompact Sennheiser AVX-Combo SET provides professional videographers, video journalists, or vloggers with a dependable wireless microphone system that's so easy to use, it's like having a dedicated sound engineer on set handling audio tasks.

Made with simplicity in mind, but without compromising audio quality, this self-configuring digital system handles time-consuming frequency setup and mic-level adjustments for you, so you're ready to shoot within seconds. Now, you can focus on the other critical elements vying for your attention during a shoot, and confidently record crisp, clear audio on your camcorder, DSLR, or mirrorless camera.

This combo set offers a flexible solution by including a bodypack transmitter, an ME 2-II omnidirectional lavalier mic, and a handheld transmitter equipped with an MMD 835 cardioid capsule. The lav provides a discreet hands-free mic option, while the handheld mic is ideal in situations where you don't have time to position a lav mic or you need to quickly pass the mic between several people. The system is ideal for wedding and corporate videos, documentaries, and red-carpet- or man-on-the-street-style interviews in noisy environments.

It should be noted that while this system includes two microphones, only one can be used at a time.

It Goes Where You Go
  • The lightweight AVX system is easy to carry with you when every ounce counts.
  • The roadworthy bodypack transmitter features a rugged metal chassis with a form factor even smaller than the EW G4. A locking connector ensures that your lav doesn't detach at a critical moment, while a convenient switch allows you to mute your mic. The display shows battery life and signal strength.
  • The robust handheld transmitter also features a rugged metal chassis and a display that shows battery life and signal strength.
  • The discreet receiver plugs directly into the XLR input of your camcorder and rotates 320° to get out of the way of lights or other accessories you may have mounted on your camera. An AF button on the receiver allows you to adjust the output level to your camera, if necessary. In addition, the receiver comes with a shoe mount and 3.5mm output cable, making it a great fit for DSLR and mirrorless shooters.
Setup Made Simple
Automatically Finds a Clean Channel
  • The digital AVX automatically finds the cleanest frequency in the 1.9 GHz band as soon as you power up the receiver.
Fast Pairing
  • A long press of the Pair button on both receiver and transmitter links the two devices. Once the indicator LED turns green, you’re good to go.
(Note that the AVX is a peer-to-peer system, meaning the transmitter can only be paired with one receiver).
Clear and Natural Speech
  • The ever-popular ME 2-II omnidirectional lavalier microphone delivers a natural sound optimized for speech intelligibility. Its omnidirectional polar pattern ensures that the sound remains consistent, even when the speaker's head moves away from the mic.
  • The handheld transmitter features an interchangeable MMD 835 dynamic cardioid capsule with a tight pickup pattern well suited for working in noisy environments.
  • The AVX's automatic mic-level control takes full advantage of the system's wide dynamic range to deliver consistent speech without clipping and distortion, even when your talent goes from a whisper to a shout.
  • The system delivers 24-bit/48 kHz audio with an extended 20 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response, for pristine, nuanced recordings.
Protected Wireless Transmission
  • The AVX operates in the license-free 1.9 GHz band—away from TV and Wi-Fi interference—to create a wireless peer-to-peer connection, for clean audio without dropouts at a range up to 98’.
  • The system automatically finds the cleanest frequency, free from RF interference.
  • If interference is detected, the AVX automatically increases the power on the transmitter—up to 250mW—to overcome the problem.
  • If the increase in power isn’t sufficient, the system substitutes a clear frequency well before the audio signal itself is affected, for clean, worry-free sound.
Power Management
  • The AVX receiver features a removable, BA 20 lithium-ion battery that is recharged via the USB port.
  • The bodypack transmitter includes a rechargeable BA 30 battery pack that will power it for up to 15 hours.
  • The handheld transmitter includes a rechargeable BA 10 battery pack that will power it for up to 15 hours.
  • The receiver turns itself on and off when it senses phantom power from your camcorder, extending battery life in the field.
  • The  receiver can also be powered through its USB port, allowing it to run for numerous hours on a USB power pack or indefinitely, if you have access to AC.
  • The BA 20, BA 10, and BA 30 batteries are also available separately, so you can have fully charged spare batteries ready in the field.
Other Features
  • Up to eight AVX systems can operate simultaneously in the same area
  • AES 256-bit encryption for secure communication
  • Made in Germany

I'm shooting with a 16mm camera so won't be able to phantom power the receiver. Can I power it w/ an external battery instead?
Asked by: Marielle
You could use a portable phantom power supply such as the Mackie M48 Single-Channel 48V Phantom Power Supply (B&H # MAM48) or the Xvive Audio P1 Portable Phantom Power Supply with Rechargeable Battery (B&H # XVP1) to power the Sennheiser AVX EKP Camera-Mount Digital Plug-In Receiver included with the Sennheiser AVX-Combo SET Digital Camera-Mount Wireless Microphone System.

Does this product need a separate charging base for batteries on transmitter and mic? How long do batteries last?
Asked by: Marquie
The Sennheiser AVX-Combo SET Digital Camera-Mount Wireless Microphone System includes the NT 5-10U USB power supply/charger and a USB cable for recharging the BA 10 Accupack battery in the handheld transmitter, the BA 20 Accupack battery in the receiver, or the BA 30 Accupack battery in the bodypack transmitter. As an option, you can separately purchase the Sennheiser CHG 2 2-Bay Tabletop Charger (B&H # SE506219), which has universal charging slots for either bodypack or handheld transmitters with the batteries inside, and can also charge the BA10 and BA30 batteries without the transmitters.

Can I use it on Phoenix Octopus device for an additional Microphone?
Asked by: Facinet
Unfortunately not. The Phoenix Audio MT454-PA Octopus USB Base Unit is no longer available. Also the Phoenix Octopus is for Audio Conferencing and full Duplex Communication. The Sennheiser AVX you are referring to is two separate wireless mic's. With XLR receiver's that plug right into the camera. It was designed primarily for "run and gun" type of work.

I often use my EW100 kit to transmit an audio feed from a sound console. Does the AVX platform provide for such an application?
Asked by: William
Yes, you can. Just like the EW, you would need to use the CL-2 cable to connect an output from the mixer to the transmitter.

How would you plug in the transmitter into a PA system Mixer? I'm thinking all I'd need is a 3.5mm male-to-3 pin XLR (male or female) short cable...with the 3.5 end plugged into the transmitter, and the the XLR end plugged into an XLR "out" on the board???
Asked by: ray
The AVX transmitter only excepts a mic level signal, so you would have to add a PSC ALMP Line to Mic Level Pad In-Line Barrel Adapter, B&H # PSALMP, along with a cable which you correctly mentioned. The Remote Audio 3-Pin XLR Female to 3.5mm TRS Locking Adapter Cable for Sennheiser Transmitter (2'), B&H # RECASEK100L would be a good choice .

question

Does this come with 2 xlr receivers so the two mics can be used at one time?
Asked by: Nathan
There is only one mic in the set, the very good pro MKE2. If you want to use a second mic, you need to get another whole set.
