SmallHD ULTRA 5 Reviews

Great quality image, terrible ergonomics.

I love the image I get from the Ultra 5 as it's very crisp, bright, and makes judging exposure and focus very easy. The menu system can be a bit of a faff and color correcting isn't the easiest (the factory calibration is very warm and throws colors off). But the Ultra 5 can be frustrating to mount on the camera due to the placement of the cables all along the bottom edge, some very close to the 1/4-20 mounting hole limiting what can be placed there. Also, SmallHD limited the powering options so one has to use Gold, V-, or B-mount batteries in a proprietary sled, removing the option for smaller NP-F batteries. That again makes mounting the monitor a challenge due to the sheer weight of the monitor plus a battery (all together it's almost heavier than my camera). Lastly, this thing gets incredibly hot. Using it outdoors in the summer and having to grab it when adjusting viewing angle feels like I could burn myself.

Has Endured Years Of Abuse

My Ultra 5 Has Been A Tank And My Preferred Handheld Onboard For The Last 18mos. I Came To Buy A 2nd One! The Straight Lemo Is Terrible Though, Should Be Right Angle! I've Also Used The Touchscreen Version And Hated It. Camera Menu Interface In A Touchscreen Is Useless IMO And Not Worth The Hassle Of Accidentally Cycling Windows On The Monitor While Shooting.
