Lightweight Magnesium Chassis
The lightweight yet rugged magnesium housing enhances durability and longevity for generations to come. Was super excited to receive these binoculars and was disappointed that they came with dirty lenses. Luckily I know how to clean lenses properly, even though this made me almost an hour late to get to my local birding spot after receiving my binoculars.
These binoculars are truly alpha level optically , though not as good as the Zeiss and Swarovski top tier. They do hit well above their price point and are actually a very good alternative to something in the over $3K price range.
Very, very forgiving eye box.
Pretty good eye relief control though I wish there were more stops.
So very light compared to optics of similar or higher quality.
Ocular rain guard needs to be redesigned for use when it is adjusted to narrow eyes distance. I had to modify mine.
Very narrow eye distance of these binoculars is not mentioned often enough. There are many choices in this size class that I can’t use comfortably and these are a great choice for me or women or youth to experience alpha performance.
Very good focus system but not as much better as is advertised. It just works and works well.
Diopter adjustment is normal and works like it is supposed to but a locking feature would be nice. It does stay where you put it.
Comes with a garbage neck strap. Zeiss makes a failed attempt in this regard. This is very common across the board in the industry so don’t worry about it. Just upgrade to an Opt/Tech strap. You don’t need a inconvenient, pricey and complex harness as much as you think you do.
Not made in Germany like their top tier but worthy of comparing to any other alpha level optic. Japan has a culture of quality and Germany is obviously involved in the management of this product’s manufacturing.
Very nice fitted objective covers. Open and close of them is kind of difficult but they feel like they’ll break in well. Also they don’t interfere with full eye distance adjustment, an important feature for me.

I bought these as an upgrade from Vortex Razors, though the primary reason for getting new glass was to move from 10x to 8x. In size, weight, balance, and one-handed operability - a primary criteria for me - the two glasses are pretty similar. I also looked at the Leica Ultravid HD Plus and the Nikon Monarch HG.
The Nikon was eliminated immediately - it just wasn't in the same optical class - and the Leica got the heave-ho soon after: very heavy with a very stiff, not-that-smooth focus action.
These are very well balanced and nicely sized. Focus know action is smooth and very accurate without being fussy, contrast is excellent, color rendition beautiful, light transmission is quite good, and that signature Zeiss pop is there, allowing the subject to stand out from its background. Eye relief is good - I don't wear glasses - and the eye-cups are comfortable as is the unit in your hand. The diopeter adjustment ring doesn't lock as it did on the Vortex, but it is stiff enough that I've experienced zero movement so far.
Thrilled with my purchase. Can't wait for my next big trip.

Is it balanced to be heavy on the eyepiece side? That is an ergonomic feature. I think I saw somewhere that it is balanced that way, but the Zeiss literature seems to indicate it is not.

The 42mm SF models are quite long and were designed with more of the weight near the eyepiece. The SFLs are shorter and lighter, that balance shift is not needed. I own the 8x40 SFLs and have no issue with balance.

SFL binoculars are made in Japan where there is a culture of quality. I also think, judging from the type of quality, that Zeiss is highly involved with management, design and quality control. These binoculars are obviously not just simply outsourced.
