ZEISS SFL 8x40 Overview

Premium Optics and Ergonomic Design
Lightweight, compact, and ergonomic, these 8x40 SFL Binoculars combine ease of use with the premium optical quality ZEISS is known for. The SFL (SmartFocus Lightweight) line uses slightly smaller objective lenses for a significant weight reduction from previous models, making a day of nature observation or sightseeing more comfortable. You'll enjoy the generous field of view for the big picture and the 5' close-focus distance for a good look at that nearby bird or butterfly. The SFL is nitrogen-filled to prevent internal fogging and waterproof to nearly 14'.
Lightweight Magnesium Chassis
  • The lightweight yet rugged magnesium housing enhances durability and longevity for generations to come. The smaller lens diameter allows ZEISS to use thinner lens elements that can be installed closer together. At the same time, the SFL binoculars offer flawless image quality despite the incredible reduction in weight and volume relative to other models.
  • The lens diameter has been reduced by 2mm, making it possible to use thinner lens elements at closer spacing and reduce the weight by up to 20% and their volume by up to 13% compared to the ZEISS Victory SF models.
True Colors for Nature/Wildlife Observation
  • The Ultrahigh-Definition (UHD) concept features a special coating and an improved optical design that ensures the binoculars deliver the highest level of detail and reproduce colors with natural fidelity.
  • Featuring 90% light transmission and ZEISS T* multicoating, you can clearly and precisely recognize details in the twilight, ensuring you capture every moment, even in darker environments.
SmartFocus Concept for Intuitive, Precise Handling
  • The SmartFocus concept makes it possible to focus quickly and precisely - without having to spread your fingers. The focusing wheel, perfectly positioned in the DoubleLink Bridge, offers the highest level of operating ergonomics, requiring only 1.4 turns from close focus to infinity and capable of being rotated precisely even with gloves on.
  • The ergonomics of the ZEISS SFL models enable quick and easy positioning of the eye and provide comfortable and immersive viewing due to the large exit pupil. The improved eyecups offer an even better ergonomic feel and a smooth transition between the touch points, which are precisely defined and can be easily reached.
ZEISS T* Coating
  • ZEISS T* coating guarantees brilliant, high-contrast images in adverse light conditions and at twilight.
  • There are always exciting things to be seen in the world of nature, even in wet weather. This is why ZEISS developed LotuTec, a coating for the lenses of binoculars and spotting scopes that enables a clear and unhindered view in all weather conditions.

ZEISS SFL 8x40 Reviews

Great for Birding!

I decided it was time to upgrade from my Celestron Trailseeker ED 8x42 (also a great pair of binoculars for the price). The Zeiss SFL excel at color rendition and light gathering. I’ve been impressed by how the colors of birds really pop. Also the clarity across the field of view is stellar, and I don’t notice much distortion at the edges. I wear glasses, and the eye relief is fine for me with the eye cups all the way down. Lastly, these binoculars are so light! I know the 40mm lens diameter is part of the reason, but with the clarity and FOV, I hardly notice the difference compared to 42mm.

Flawless

The contrast, clarity, resolution, color saturation, and neutral color palette are as good as anything out there. The focus is silky smooth, with no play or sloppiness, and the ergonomics are outstanding. By far the best bang for the buck binoculars on the market.

Is it balanced to be heavy on the eyepiece side? That is an ergonomic feature. I think I saw somewhere that it is balanced that way, but the Zeiss literature seems to indicate it is not.
Asked by: David
The 42mm SF models are quite long and were designed with more of the weight near the eyepiece. The SFLs are shorter and lighter, that balance shift is not needed. I own the 8x40 SFLs and have no issue with balance.
