The black Action X70 HD Backpack from Shimoda Designs is designed to accommodate large cine, digital video, and super telephoto camera kits. The HD (heavy-duty) build features reinforced critical stress points, thick nylon webbing, and aluminum hardware. It is ideal for cinematographers, wildlife shooters, and action photographers who need a durable and stable pack for their gear.

The shoulder straps are constructed with high-density EVA foam padding to ensure a comfortable carry over long periods, and the adjustable waist belt offers stability and weight distribution for easy carrying. The shoulder straps can be adjusted to your torso height and have two zippered pockets to store your phone, a water bottle, or other personal items.

A padded sleeve protects a 16" laptop or tablet, and two large pockets accommodate a tripod and a 2L water bottle. Its expandable volume offers more room so you can pack additional gear.

Adjustable Torso Height
The X70 has four height options with approximately 4" of vertical adjustment to provide a custom fit for short, medium, and tall torso heights.
Padded Laptop Sleeve
Rear pocket accommodates a 16" laptop, including the MacBook Pro 16.
Expandable Roll Top Access
The roll top access expands to add extra capacity up to 7L. The top section also has a YKK SplashGuard zipper for quick and easy access while providing protection in wet conditions.
Hidden Sleeve for Tracking Device
A hidden sleeve holds an AirTag or a Tile Pro tracking device so you can locate your pack if it gets lost or stolen.

Great bag for travel and hiking to wildlife

I’ve had this bag for 6 weeks and it has been hauled thousands of miles from swamps/ bogs to local mountain trails and distant Stadiums. The camera insert is huge and accommodates my 200-600, 70-200 and an extra body with the various other odds and ends we all carry to do our jobs. The top area of the bag is where I store personal daily living gear and there are nice big side pockets for more gear or a tripod/ monopod etc. Laptop/ tablet has a padded compartment, although I wish there was a JIC strap to secure the opening to prevent the laptop from sliding out' (it hasn’t yet, but very well could one day.) One other minor issue is that the insert is VERY deep to accommodate the massive hoods and prime telephotos. My gear swims inside the insert and I have to use like 5 large scarves and bandanas to take up the extra depth to keeps things from flopping around while I move. It’s more just somewhat annoying than anything to have to move all this random fabric to get to the camera. Thinktank supplies pillows and a yoke in their long lens bag that would be great for the depth of this insert. Trying to find them a la carte. All in all, a very comfy bag with decent adjustability and has kept my stuff safe and dry in some gnarly environments. Not perfect but very good.

The Shimoda Designs Action X70 HD Backpack fits a Canon RF600 lens with R5 attached. Makes for quick access of camera + super-tele lens when in the field. Well made with lots of options and extra padding for when needs vary. I can pack this bag to the gills to take all my gear on international trips while squeaking into carry-on restrictions. Well made. Highly recommend.

To hold your camera gear, the Shimoda Designs Action X70 HD Starter Kit (Black) includes the Shimoda Designs DV V2 Core Unit (Extra Large), BH #SHELDVV2. The interior dimensions are 18.9 x 11.4 x 7.9" (48 x 29 x 20.1 cm).

Has anyone taken the Action X70 HD Backpack with XL core unit as carry-on? Looks the dimensions wise it is little over carry-on but wanted to know if the top can be rolled down to take it as carry-on?

YES! Not overpacked. The insert comes out, so if there isn't space in the overhead, you can remove it and slide your camera gear under your seat. Works on 737s, some Embraer ERJ, but for CRJs regional jets you need to collapse your bag and remove the insert. Least problems carrying on with Delta and Alaska through the Mountain West. Southwest are nervous about allowing it. AA is either fine, or will make you miserable.

Do you have to buy the core units separately or does it come with one?

The Shimoda Action X70 HD Backpack does not come with the core units in this configuration. They have a starter kit that comes with the medium sized core unit that you can buy.
