Steiner Commander Marine 7x50 Overview

From Manufacturer

With antireflection, high-definition lenses delivering sharp, clear images by day or night, the 7x50 Commander Marine Binoculars from Steiner are a mainstay of the maritime world. The configuration of 7x magnifying power, 50mm objective lenses, and individual, one-time focus is a proven favorite on the water, where excessive magnification and focusing only get in the way. Open-bridge design makes the binoculars easy to grip, and foldable winged eyecups keep lateral light out of your eyes.

For extra protection against dirt, oil, and water, Steiner treated the objectives and oculars with a hydrophobic coating that resists scratches and makes cleaning the lenses easier without residue. The chassis is made of lightweight and impact-resistant polycarbonate that is wrapped in an NBR synthetic rubber armor that is oil, petroleu, and chemical resistant. The optical tubes are nitrogen-filled and O-ring sealed to be waterproof to a depth of 33 feet, and resistant to internal fogging when moving through extreme temperature changes and environmental conditions.

Optical Performance
  • 7x power provides moderate magnification while helping to produce a wide exit pupil for easier low-light use, without sacrificing field of view
  • Large 50mm objective lens diameter admits ample light for a brighter image at dawn and dusk, or in dense fog
  • Traditional Porro prism design makes it comfortable to hold, and presents a rich depth of field
  • Diamond marine coating maximizes light transmission and color rendition across the entire visible spectrum, with improved contrast and clarity
  • Proprietary Nano-Protection protects lens surfaces enabling water to bead off, and preventing dirt from sticking, to provide clearer views in all weather conditions
Use and Handling
  • Individually-focusing eyepieces enable highly-precise focusing, with memory diopter system to store and indicate personal diopter setting
  • Fold-down rubber eyecups for comfortable use with or without eyewear
  • Large 7.1mm exit pupil is optimized for low-light conditions to completely cover pupils when they are fully dilated to avoid vignetting of the view

Steiner Commander Marine 7x50 Reviews

get one if you have a yacht (or if you like a good 7x50)

pros -vibrant colours, and white surfaces actually look white -noticeably brighter than the 2 other 7x50's I own (in dark conditions, during the day I can't tell a difference) -colour fringing is well controlled, especially in the centre -light and compact for a 7x50 -15mm of actual eye relief when eyecups are folded down (measured with very low tech equipment) -straps and objective covers are very easy to remove and snap in nicely -rubber looks and feels high quality -hinge is smooth and stiff -diopters are labelled to adjust +-5 but go further, maybe +-8 -eyecups are thin, soft comfortable rubber that block out all light from the sides that makes the view immersive cons -no field flatteners here: the last 20% or so gets progressively more blurry and bends away -the view seems slightly difficult on my eyes compared to my other 7x50's, maybe because of the relatively poor edge correction -objective lens covers have fallen off of the binos on me a few times when laying against my chest or when set on a table in a certain way (I've tried replicating this without success.) -stars are less point-like than when viewed through my Noctivid -eye cups are the fold-down style, so they're pretty poor for use with glasses

Superior to Leica?

No regrets on this purchase whatsoever! I find them to be as good as or even slightly superior to my Leica Noctivid 8 x 42 binoculars. Yes, different optical parameters on both of these BUT the Image quality overall (and ergonomics) on the Steiner unit is at least as good as the Leica. The Leica is $2,900 and nearly 3X more expensive that the Steiner.
