I bought this to record audio from synths/drum machines. I also use it as a monitor and have headphones attached, which works well (there is zero latency when using headphones to monitor). The headphone amp circuit is a little noisy, so I had to get an inline volume control for my headphones (which don't have a built-in volume dial), but it worked to tune out the white noise. This thing is a decent device for the price, and I am happy with it.
Disappointing Experience with the Zoom Recorder

My experience with the Zoom Recorder has been marred by a substantial flaw that significantly impacts its overall reliability. The device failed to save files when the batteries were depleted, leading to a frustrating loss of crucial content during a pivotal recording session. This critical setback has left me thoroughly dissatisfied with the recorder's performance.
Compounding the issue, when attempting to export a project, I encountered another limitation that further hindered the device's functionality. The imposed 2GB export limit presented a significant obstacle, especially considering the 93-minute maximum for exporting in 32-bit float, as outlined in the manual. This restriction not only proved inconvenient but also hampered my ability to utilize the Zoom Recorder to its full potential.
The disappointment is exacerbated by the fact that I had relied heavily on the Zoom Recorder to capture high-quality audio during a wedding event. The inherent limitations of on-camera audio prompted my reliance on this device, and the subsequent failure to save content due to battery depletion has left me in a precarious situation. Without a reliable backup, the device's shortcomings have resulted in the absence of crucial speeches and audio that were integral to the event.
In conclusion, the Zoom Recorder's failure to save files when batteries are depleted, coupled with its restrictive export limitations, has severely impacted its usability and reliability. This experience has not only frustrated my expectations but also compromised the successful documentation of important events. As a consumer, I am left disheartened by the device's inability to fulfill its intended purpose effectively.

Can the preamps drive a Shure SM7b? Whats the preamp gain?
Asked by: Rashid
Zoom has not specified the amount of gain available from the Zoom R4 MultiTrak 32-Bit Float Recorder with Stereo Bouncing's preamps. This is typical for 32-bit devices, since gain adjustment is neither possible nor necessary. Since it is a 32-bit recorder, it should be capable of making a satisfactory recording with even a low-output dynamic mic such as the Shure SM7b.

Maybe a specialist can clarify on what tracks means vs inputs, what stereo bouncing is and where effects go, on the 4 tracks? TY
Asked by: Spineanu
You can mix up to 4 separate audio tracks within the Zoom R4 MultiTrak 32-Bit Float Recorder with Stereo Bouncing. It has 2 combination inputs, so you can connect an XLR connection mic or line source, or a 1/4'' connection mic or line source into either of the 2 inputs on the bottom of the recorder. Stereo bouncing means that you can create a single stereo track of everything that you are mixing on the recorder. Track effects are 3-band EQ, pan, echo, and reverb, available for each track. Input effects can be applied to each of the physical inputs while recording, like amp simulation for guitars, delay. and distortion.

With the Zoom R4 MultiTrak 32-Bit Float Recorder with Stereo Bouncing, you can record up to four tracks. You can record to one track using the external inputs or the built-in mic on the recorder and then record up to three additional tracks in the same manner. You can then mix them on the recorder.
