SmallRig 4261 Reviews

Decent construction but unhelpful for video w/o gimbal

I purchased this primarily to shoot video (with a grip/handle) and really didn't like it. The construction was fine--not stellar, but it felt reasonably well made. The biggest annoyance is that you have to remove the triangle ring from the Zf in order to mount the cage. The rings are very hard to get off, especially if you don't want to scratch up your camera. I assumed the cage would have reasonable ergonomics for holding the camera to take photos as well as video because, surely, they don't expect you to take the cage off each time you want to just shoot photos since it's such a pain. But, the grip on the cage is very uncomfortable, plus it's slick and feels really flimsy. No way I wanted to use it to go shooting (and the bottom has lots of attachment points, etc., so it's uncomfortable to hold). After attaching the handle--which is also really uncomfortable to hold--I played with video and found that my handheld shots without anything were just as good as with the cage set up. The cage adds quite a bit of weight and makes an otherwise delightful camera unpleasant to use. I returned it and plan on purchasing a gimbal so I can still use my camera for photos whenever I want to.

How many 1/4”-20 threaded holes are on the side of the cage? I see 4 similarly sized holes, but only 1 hole is mentioned.

The SmallRig Camera Cage for Nikon Zf has a total of four 1/4-20 connections on the handle side of the cage and five 1/4-20 on the other side for mounting gear. The image below shows this in detail. Image of the left and right side of the cage. https://bhpho.to/48gwJuz
