Do I even need this...???

When I purchased my Sony A7V, this baseplate was suggested by B&H as an add-on. I liked how it appeared to contour neatly to the bottom of the camera, but I quickly noticed it was labeled for the A7IV and A7RV, not specifically the new A7V. I contacted B&H through their online chat, and they assured me it would work. Still, I found myself wondering if I even needed it. I already own L-brackets and baseplates from other brands that serve the same purpose. After thinking it over for a few minutes, I decided that at the $40 price point, it was worth trying. If it didn’t fit properly or I simply didn’t like it, I could always return it. I’m glad I took the chance. First, it fits the A7V perfectly, no issues at all. Second, for anyone concerned about battery access, there is a notch built into the plate that allows the battery door to open fully. You absolutely do not have to remove the baseplate to change the battery. Third, it extends the grip just enough to allow my pinky finger to rest comfortably instead of curling underneath the camera body. That small ergonomic improvement makes a noticeable difference during longer shooting sessions. Lastly, it doesn’t add any additional weight compared to my older L-bracket setup, which I really appreciate. If you use an Arca-Swiss style tripod head and are considering this baseplate, it’s an excellent match for the Sony A7IV (yes, I tested it on that body as well) and the A7V, where mine now permanently lives. For the price, fit, and functionality, it turned out to be a great addition.

Not sure what the difference is between Ver 1 and 2

Fan of SmallRig, have been pleased with almost everything I have purchased made by them. This is another winner. I also have this baseplate for my A7cII, which I felt needed a little something more for my hand. The A7RV has a better grip, so didn't feel this is a critical a need for this body. But now that I have it, do find that it does indeed improve the grip. One nice detail, is the plate has similar texturing to the A7RV grip, nice touch. So it doesn't feel like an add-on. I was keeping a tripod plate on my A7RV, but found it some situations shooting from a table handheld that it tilted my composition a little. And didn't 'rest' well when not in use. So this base plate improves on both those issue and does indeed improve the handhold-ability of the camera. Those are real pluses, especially since I tend to use my larger GM lenses with the this body. As the title states, not sure what the difference is between version 1 and 2 but this gets two thumbs up from me.
