Macro Focusing Rail Kit Reviews

"Compact", capable, and appropriately tedious.

There is a trade off to be made with this focusing rail. So going into what I like, what is good but be aware, and my personal preference wish. When working with a full frame camera, this is about as small of a focusing rail as I would recommend to get full functionality. When setting up for a single subject, single image shoot, I really don't need more than 4". But if I'm getting multiple images and setups in a shoot, it is nice to have this extra length to speed up the setups. But it isn't so big that it becomes cumbersome. The controls are on the small side. Also small in that especially when positioning the top plate, getting your fingers in there can be a bit tight. But not to the point that I get frustrated or give up due to hassle of my next shot. I also wear size 9 gloves. So those with more average sized hands will likely find it even easier than me. An attention to detail that I LOVE is the 3/8" mounting screw on the bottom. By the time you add up this focus rail, camera, lens, and pressure of operating the rail, that can add up to some pretty good stress on a 1/4" screw. With a 1/4" mount screw, I would probably either be changing screws each month as insurance. And/or a year later find my camera on the floor after a snapped screw gives under the strain. So big fan of the 3/8" mount for this rail. The only thing I would have wished for is due to the size of my hands. I would have preferred the handle to crank the long distance screw to be about twice as long as it actually is. And for the camera mount block to be a 1/4" taller. Just to give my fingers a bit more space to wedge between the controls, bottom rail, and the camera body. It works as is. Just be aware for large hands/fingers, it can be cramped at times.

An excellent performer.

Over several decades I've owned at least a dozen macro-focusing rails, mostly longer ones, and currently own two longer, non-Oben rails. Until this short Oben Macro Focusing Rail, all have had play in the camera platform movement on the rail and/or in gearing (threads), the latter so that there is a noticeable hesitation (play) when reversing the direction of movement. I find no such problems with this one - the best I've owned.
