Control the light into your lens and add filters with this Tilta Mirage Matte Box with Motorized VND & Circular Polarizer Kit put together by B&H. The kit includes the Mirage matte box, a top flag, a motorized VND module, a circular filter tray, a Nucleus Nano motor with adapter, a wireless motor controller, a battery/charger set, a power supply, four adapter rings, and a carry case.

The lightweight matte box can easily mount onto your camera, drone, or gimbal rig to provide light control and add a filter system with motorized VND operation. The motor turns the VND module using the wireless controller, which comes in handy with constantly changing light conditions. The matte box allows you to add optional circular filters, such as the included circular polarizer, to the front of your lens while allowing the addition of 4 x 5.65" filters on the front of the matte box.

Tilta Mirage Motorized VND Kit

Built rugged for daily use on your camera rig yet lightweight for handheld, gimbal, stabilizer, or drone work, the Tilta Mirage Motorized VND Kit is a modular component system combining a matte box that clips onto 95mm OD and a variable ND system, and a wireless controller that allows you to precisely adjust the ND effect from 0.3 to 2.7 stops when needed. The matte box weighs about the same as a standard 4 x 5.65" glass filter, and it accepts Tilta's 95mm round filters with the included filter adapter. The modular design means you can configure the matte box to match your needs on a shot-by-shot basis.

The rigid hood and removable top flag aid in cutting glare and protecting your image from overhead flares. Four included lens adapters enable mounting the Mirage Matte Box on lenses with 67, 72, 77, or 82mm threaded fronts. The included 15mm LWS rod clamp can be attached, allowing you to mount the Mirage on rods to take the weight off your lens or use lenses with rotating fronts. An optional 4 x 5.65" stackable filter holder lets you mount 4 x 5.65" filters on the matte box. Other modular components, such as a top flag, dual circular filter tray, Nano motor, filter protector, and rubber hood for shooting up against windows are available separately.

Variable ND System
The included VND module enables you to precisely adjust the ND effect from 0.3 to 2.7 stops. The module has built-in hard stops between ND 0.3 to 2.7 to reduce the chance that the dreaded X-pattern shadow appears. The variable ND has no color shift for natural colors, and it has a larger axis between the filter elements. Tilta recommends that to prevent vignetting, use ND 0.3 to 2.1 for wide lenses and ND 2.1 to 2.7 for focal lengths beyond 35mm.
Wireless Motor System
The wireless micro-motor can wirelessly adjust the VND unit remotely, allowing you to adjust the amount of ND when your camera is mounted on a stabilizer or gimbal, or when you need smooth adjustment without disturbing the camera during a take. The standard wireless range is about 328', and it can extend to over a mile by using an optional wireless signal amplifier, which is great for aerial photography. The VND's motor can be controlled with the new included wireless controller or Tilta's Nucleus Series Wireless Follow Focus Systems. The Wireless Controller mounts via NATO rail and can control the Nucleus M and Nano motor, as well as the Wireless Motor for the Tilta Mirage. Use the included Nucleus Nano Motor Mounting Bracket to secure the Nucleus Nano motor directly to the VND module.
Designed for the Wind
The matte box body has been designed to aid the airflow with integrated vents that can reduce wind resistance and improve stability when shooting subjects at high speeds, such as in a car or on a drone.
Modular Design
The modular design allows you to configure your matte box in a variety of ways: from completely stripped down using only the 95mm filter holder with the lens clamp to adding a 4 x 5.65" stackable tray, the included lens hood, the included top flag, or swapping the hood for an optional rubber hood. Additionally, you can add the optional 15mm LWS rod support, so you can mount the matte box to rods for handling heavier filter loads, such as the optional VND (variable neutral density) system.
95mm Circular Filter System
Tilta's 95mm circular (round) filter system proves coverage for lenses with up to a 95mm outer lens barrel diameter, and it provides significant weight savings over traditional filters, as the circular filters weigh about 1/4 the weight of traditional 4 x 5.65" glass filters.
Filters
An optional 4 x 5.65" stackable filter tray can be added between the filter clamp and matte box hood, allowing you to easily add one or two 4 x 5.65" filters to the matte box.

Tilta 95mm Circular Polarizer for Mirage Matte Box

Clouds will billow off the page and a flowing stream will reveal its stony bed when using the 95mm Circular Polarizer for Mirage Matte Box from Tilta. It slides into the Mirage, or it can be clamped directly onto a 95mm lens with the Lightweight Filter Clamp-On Adapter (available separately).

The polarizer blocks the light that appears as haze in the sky or a reflection off the surface of the water. Rotate the filter, either by hand or via an optional wireless motor, to find the angle that blocks the maximum amount of unwanted light, highlighting your subject and boosting the contrast of your image.

For the Mirage Matte Box
This polarizer slides snugly into the Tilta Mirage, ensuring that a lens with a 95mm front diameter is perfectly covered. Alternatively, it can be clamped directly onto the lens via the Lightweight Filter Clamp-On Adapter (available separately).
Compatible with the Wireless Motor
The module that controls the polarizer rotation is compatible with the Tilta Wireless Motor (available separately), enabling camera operators to remotely control the polarizer's rotation to find its maximum effect.
The Physics of Polarizers
Polarizers filter out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface, like when sunlight becomes partially polarized due to reflecting off electrons in air molecules, causing the light to scatter into what appears as haze. Using a polarizer to block just those light rays results in a noticeable reduction of glare and reflections from nonmetallic surfaces and an increase in the saturation of skies and foliage.
Autofocus and Exposure Control
Linear polarizers distort the incoming light to the point that autofocus and internal light metering are negatively impacted. To correct this, circular polarizers stack a randomizing filter layer behind the polarizer to scatter the light, which enables those camera functions to perform properly.

Super Useful!

I got this after getting a Nikon Z6 III. Since it's very difficult to get a variable ND behind the lens, especially with PL mount lenses (wide angle lenses protrude deep, and the Mofage Vari ND PL Mount I got wouldn't work with those lenses), this made it work great! Only thing is it'd be great to have more of those adapter rings for different lenses, as it does take time to unscrew and rescrew them on for each of your lenses, which is costly on a film set.

excellent matte box for light run/gun but still want filters

I initially purchase the Mirage Pro not realizing just how big it was for my Sony FX6. I returned that and chose this box because I still wanted ability to run filters but without the massive size/weight of other matte boxes that supported filters. The circular filter setup sheds a lot of weight but still gives you 2 stages for circular (if not using the VND) and allows 1 4x5 in the front. It's light enough I will likely get another one for my FX3 and use the VND on it as I currently use the polar pro recon on it. Quality is really good, I like the clamp style far more than the PP Recon as it's faster to remove. I do wish the matte box cover knob was on the right instead of left but thats likely because I'm left handed I tend to support the weight more often with my left hand. the PP Recon in on the right so muscle memory is off due to that. I also like the rubber flange you can snap on if you are working in tight quarters and dont need the flag. Very flexible setup, love it!

Does this have built in IR filtration? If so what wave lengths are being filtered? To be used with RED komodo, has no IR filter
Asked by: Matthew
No, the Tilta Mirage VND Kit does not cut IR on it's own, but you can add Vaxis IRND filters to the matte box to block out IR light. See: https://bhpho.to/3J5e2wv

Is it possible to get an adapter to be able to put the system to the carl zeiis Cp2 cine prime optics?
Asked by: Andres
No it is not. The CP2s have a larger opening than this matte box therefore if you attach this matte box to your CP2s it is far more likely to create a vignette.

Asked by: Ra'Shaun
The Tilta Mirage VND Kit (B&H# TIMBT16A) has a female 1/4"-20 thread in the bottom along with two locator holes on either side of it. As such, if you intend to mount it on 15mm rods then the most secure means to do so would be to use the Tilta 15mm LWS Support for Mirage Matte Box (B&H# TIMBT16LS): https://bhpho.to/3NfLdRh
