GC Audio Graham Langley Overview

Recommended for engineers seeking a clean, transparent sound pickup without compromise, the Graham Langley Signature Cartridge from GC Audio is a preamp module designed exclusively for the Inherit Modular Preamp System. Based on the circuit topology of Langley's own mixing console preamps from the '70s and '80s, the Langley cartridge features plenty of improvements for powerful and superior low-noise recording.

When loaded into an Inherit chassis, the Langley Signature cartridge provides a -20 dB attenuation pad for reining in overly hot signals. Paired transistors and reliable constant current sources form the heart of this premium solid-state circuit. Digital control is used to isolate the analog signal path in the metal cartridge from EMI that might arise in the linear power supply. Both the common mode rejection and output balancing are manually calibrated for optimal performance. Finally, the resistance ratios in the preamp circuitry are very low, allowing the preamp to attain an ideal EIN value.

Design and Inspiration
The Langley Signature preamp cartridge is designed by Graham Langley, co-founder of Amek and the designer or co-designer of many large format mixing consoles (Amek Mozart, Rembrandt, Angela, etc.) Based on the circuit topology of his classic Amek console preamps from the '70s and '80s, but with much improved noise performance and distortion control, the Langley preamp cartridge provides a clean, transparent sound over the full audio spectrum.
Stepped Gain Control
A welcome feature of the Langley Signature cartridge for pro engineers is stepped gain control, which is provided in 12 steps with ±4 dB per step:

  • 1 = 16 dB
  • 2 = 20 dB
  • 3 = 24 dB
  • 4 = 28 dB
  • 5 = 32 dB
  • 6 = 36 dB
  • 7 = 40 dB
  • 8 = 44 dB
  • 9 = 48 dB
  • 10 = 52 dB
  • 11 = 56 dB
  • 12 = 60 dB
