Dedicated to the Nikon NIKKOR Z 28-400mm f/4-8 VR Lens, the HB-114 Lens Hood reduces ghosting and prevents stray light from entering the lens. While inverted, zoom operation remains possible. The hood also provides protection to the lens from accidental impacts, bumps, or scratching.

This was a replacement hood. I slipped in the mud and fell on my camera, lens down. Despite the fact that I bruised 3 ribs landing on the camera, the lens hood itself was strong enough to save the camera from any damage.. A rather weird review but it protects the camera in many ways.
B&H kindly replaced the hood that came with my 28-400 lens. That one required excessive torque to click in. So does the new one. You will damage your lens applying that amount of torque. It is necessary to squeeze the lens hood (squeeze hard!) so that the nubs that fall into detents are further apart across the diameter and can go in with less torque. The root problem is that these nubs are plastic and small, so very hard to manufacture to tight tolerances, while expecting long life.
