SmallRig AD-120 Reviews

Solid tripod for the price

I'm upgrading from ca. 2002 Manfrotto legs with a 503 head. Needless to day, the AD-120 is, on all fronts, infinitely better but what should be expected from the technological improvements one would expect 23+ years down the road. Another qualifier is that I'm an independent artist doing art-based video work. As such, my needs are no where as demanding as a commercial/professional or content-based videographer. While I've heard this tripod being compared (very) negatively to a Sachtler or OConner, I don't think it's reasonable at this price point to make that comparison. That set aside, I would say that for someone getting into the video production field, this tripod will cover your needs to get you up and running. The leg stability is there, the head has reasonably refined adjustment characteristics, and the single lock leg adjustment system is something, once you get used to it, will be sorely missed on legs that don't have this feature. If you're breaking into the field(s) of videography, need to budget yourself, and want/need a tripod that, though poses limitations (not as refined as I high end tripod), will get the job done, I think this tripod will serve you well. I use the Ad-120 for my Panasonic EVA-1 and it's absolutely capable of handling a camera of this size and weight. It will be a dream for the mirrorless DSLR crowd. Check it out...

Lightweighr, multiple funtions.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] It has a nice amount of mass which aids its stability and is an attribute to its being solidly constructed. Many of the components are well thought out and, after a little head scratching as to what knob does. Most of the tripod's components move very smoothly. When moving the head, as in tracking a moving object or scene, the motion is just slightly jerky. There is a fine tuning screw for the ball's motion, but, even using that screw, it is not super-smooth. Lightweight and easily converts to a monopod. Also can use 1/4-20 and 5/16-18 accessories when removing the ball head with any tolls.

What is the difference between this item and the SmallRig AD-Pro8 Kit SM4465. They look identical but there’s a $200 difference?
Asked by: Richard
After a little more investigation I think I found the answer. The tripod in both kits is the same. Both come with ground level and mid level spreaders. The fluid head, however, is different. This is evident in the picture and in the listing for thiese items on other sites. This kit (SM4463) comes with the DH12 Video Head. The other kit (SM4465) comes with the better PH8 Professional Fluid Head. There is a difference of $240 in the cost of these two heads when purchased seperately. I think there is an error in this listing.

Can I just purchase their CF tripod only (not their fluid head)? I wish to attach my own Sachtler Video 14 II head.

No, currently the AD-120 Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs are not available separate to the SmallRig AD-120 Heavy-Duty Carbon Fiber Tripod Kit.
