Hollyland PYRO S Overview

From Manufacturer

Add up to 4K30 wireless video transmission to your production using the versatile Pyro S 4K HDMI/SDI Wireless Video Receiver from Hollyland. The receiver provides HDMI and SDI outputs and features extremely low 50 ms latency that accepts line-of-sight transmission from up to 1300' away. When using broadcast mode using up to four receivers and two mobile devices, the system supports up to 650' away.

The Pyro S is equipped with a USB-C port that can power the unit and also supports plug-and-play UVC operation, so it can seamlessly plug into a computer and utilize the wireless video for streaming and conferencing applications. The built-in frequency scanner allows you to select the clearest frequency for your transmission and features a bright LCD screen for configuration. In addition to the multifunction USB-C port, the unit can be powered using a separately available locking DC power adapter or an L-series type battery using an optional battery plate.

Long Distance, High Quality
The Pyro S Wi-Fi broadcast technology enables one transmitter to connect to four receivers with stable signals, offering more flexibility when additional monitoring needs emerge on set. When Broadcast mode is activated, the transmitter can transmit signals to at most four receivers, and the line-of-sight range reaches 650'. When Broadcast mode is deactivated, the transmitter can transmit signals to at most two receivers and two mobile devices, and the line-of-sight range extends up to 1300'.
Strong Signal Strength
At a stable transmission range of up to 1300', the Pyro S features latency as low as 50ms. Compared to the Mars series, whose transmission range extends at the cost of image quality and latency, the Pyro S excels with increased transmission distance while preserving video quality and minimizing latency. The transmitter/receiver combo also provides two modes for users to tip the balance between image quality and latency, with HD mode for better image quality with a bit rate of up to 12 Mb/s and Smooth mode for a dynamic change in latency.
Crisp and Sharp Images
With up to 4K30 transmission capabilities via HDMI and 1080p60 via SDI, the Pyro S transmits images with superior clarity, detail, and realism, making it a great choice for professional applications like broadcast and filmmaking.
USB Video Class
UVC allows seamless compatibility with a wide range of devices, such as computers, without requiring additional drivers or software installations. This plug-and-play feature simplifies setup and operation, making it convenient for users in various scenarios, such as live streaming and video conferencing.
RTMP Streaming
Input your wireless key and connect a network card to stream video directly to live platforms like Zoom, YouTube, Twitch, and TikTok.
Smart Channel Scan
Upon startup, Pyro S automatically chooses a high-quality frequency channel, optimizing the user experience from the outset. Additionally, users can activate the smart channel scan function on the receiver to view real-time feedback on the frequency status, thus ensuring an uninterrupted and reliable experience.
Easy Setup
The Pyro S supports preset grouping and pairing, eliminating the need for users to repetitively and manually set up the transmitter and receivers.
Continuous Power, Multiple Options
In addition to DC input and NP-F batteries, the Pyro S also supports a USB-C power supply (5-12V). A USB power supply option provides convenience, especially when using stabilizers, as it eliminates the need for larger NP-F batteries, reducing overall weight and enhancing maneuverability.

Hollyland PYRO S Reviews

Excellent transmission system. 4k terminology is a gimmick, but great for HD workflows.

This transmission set works very well. It wasn't hard to get it set up and the signal works very reliably in a room with around 300 people, plus wireless sound equipment. It does a great job finding and staying on an uncongested frequency. When I tried Teradek's Bolt 6 LT, I had to manually configure the frequency before the signal stabilized, so props to Hollyland for getting this right in a lower-end model. Like I said in the title, the "4k" label is a gimmick that allows you to run a feed from a 4k camera that comes out HD on the other side. I ran some testing with a 4k switcher to switch between inputs on the same 4k monitor. I plugged the Hollyland's HDMI output into the switcher alongside my camera's 12G-SDI feed to compare the difference. I verified that the Pyro S was indeed processing 4k video on its display and switched it to "HD Mode." While it DOES output 4k video technically, it's VERY compressed and looks more like regular HD footage. I even plugged in the Pyro S's down-converted 3G-SDI out into my switcher at the same time as the HDMI out (while still sending 4k video) and there was almost NO DIFFERENCE in clarity. The color from the HDMI out was also a little off compared to the 3G-SDI out. Finally, I switched my camera output to 1080p and the output from the Pyro S looked exactly the same. LOL. A very annoying gimmick. Why even bother putting "4k" in such big letters on the device??? For comparison, I might as well add that if you're looking for something closer to that full 4k-over-SDI quality, I highly recommend the Bolt 6. I ran a similar comparison as above with the Bolt 6 and the clarity between the Bolt 6's output and the SDI out from the camera was pretty much indistinguishable and colors were perfect. That is definitely a "You get what you pay for" scenario.

Solid video transmission for the price

As long as you're aware that these would NOT be used to follow focus, they are fantastic for their price. They work fairly seamlessly with a transmitter/receiver combo. The only reason I've docked a star is that the app is the main reason I use them and for no pattern I could recognize, I sometimes have to restart the app to get them to continue working. It's a small price to pay because when they are working, they are wildly convenient.

Other than the SDI port and screen, are there any differences in capabilities or transmission distances between the H and S?
Asked by: Michael
Other minor differences between the Hollyland Pyro H and Hollyland Pyro S are menu control and latency. For control the Pyro H has a clickable wheel where the Pyro S has buttons for menu navigation and latency on the Pyro H is 60 ms vs 50 ms on the Pyro S.

Asked by: Ken
You can use two different transmitters of the Hollyland Pyro S 4K HDMI/SDI Wireless Video Transmission System in the same room transmitting to different receivers, but performance will depend on your local wireless interference and size of the room. Make sure that your receivers are placed at least 12" apart for the best performance.
