Can I add handheld microphones?
This is a single channel receiver, you can use a handheld with it as long as it's made by Sennheiser and it runs in the same frequency, however you wont be able to use both the lavalier and handheld at the same time.

question
How far can you be from the receiver before the signal starts to drop out ?
Every situation is different, so it is difficult to say what kind of distance you will get exactly, before the RF signal begins to drop off. Given the output power of the transmitter is 10mW, you can expect clear reception within 75-100 feet in an open space with low RF and a low squelch setting.
