Plustek OpticSlim 1680 Reviews

excellent 1200dpi 11" x 17" scanner with a few software issues

look. this thing is awesome and it's worth the money and, as long as it can last physically, may never need to be replaced unless speed is paramount for some professional applications. the included DVD and the software from their website don't seem to be compatible with the newest Apple Silicon. HOWEVER, Image Capture works just fine. plug and play. Image Capture crashes from time to time and you have to unplug the scanner and restart the Image Capture but it only happens randomly. the scanner takes seconds to be ready so it's not the end of the world. the results though are phenomenal. at 11" x 17" and 1200 dpi i can archive all of my parents old photographs at a resolution that will be all that could be asked for for generations to come. with a little patience (which i've built over decades of using computers) i think this scanner is worth the money. the results are magnificent. i love the scanner

It works

So I needed something to scan legal size and larger documents that are 80+ years old. The options for flatbed scanners that will do this are lacking, you either have cheap knock off brands or Epson. I love Epson scanners and use them constantly but the lower end flat bed scanner that is equivalent to this is going to cost you $1200 for a used one, and I just couldn't justify that expense for the amount I was going to use it, that is why I went with the Plustek route. Pros: 1. Scan quality is decent. I didn't notice any problems with the clarity of what was scanned and it scanned some fairly large documents. 2. Price was decent, I got it not on sale for around $400, which like I said before was much better than what I would have spent on an Epson. Cons: 1. The software is trash. You can figure it out but it's not super straightforward and has limitations. There are no user manuals or how to videos other than a slightly useless one put out on Plustek's YouTube channel. I think the thing that bothers me the most is the cropping. The only option to crop before you scan is an auto option, which I don't trust and if there are things you need to crop out you're going to have to go back into the file and do it after the scan. 2. Color. The color of the scans is off. The documents that I scanned were too red in coloring. I was only scanning documents and not photos but I imagine that the color will be off in those as well. There are some options to adjust it in the software but if that is what is coming up by default it is kind of an issue. So be aware of that. 3. In order to actually start the scan you can only do so by pressing the physical button. You set everything up in the software but instead of having an option to scan you have to physically press the outside scan button. 4. Speed. I was creating readable PDF files and the time it took to scan and then create the document was painful. The scanning part of it was fairly quick but the processing of the document afterwords was what took forever. It may be fine with regular photo scans. Overall it depends on what you're going to use it for. If it's just for large documents that are infrequent then I would say buy it, or just set up a camera and take a photo. If however you are scanning large photos or art constantly I would probably spend the extra money and get a nice Epson. Hope this helps!
