SmallRig Matte Box Kit w/Filters Overview

Prevent lens flares and avoid glare in your footage with this 95mm Matte Box Kit with CPL/VND Filter Set from SmallRig. The matte box has a 95mm opening, making it compatible with 95mm lens diameters, and includes four threaded adapter rings to accommodate lenses of smaller measurements.

Also included are two scratch-resistant glass CPL filters, a standard 4 x 5.65" filter frame, a 4 x 5.65" filter frame for round CPL/VND filters, a lens hood, and a carbon fiber top flag to further adjust for bright sunlight or fill lights. The filters are magnetic and quickly installed within the filter frame. The two included CPL filters can create a VND effect when used together with the gearing in the hood.

Circular Polarizer/VND Filter Effects
The two CPL filters (CPL1 and CPL2) create a dynamic VND (variable neutral density) filter that allows you to rotate and adjust the density on the fly, reducing light intake by two to five stops. Each circular polarizer helps eliminate reflections from water, glass, or reflective still objects while enhancing contrast.

A separately available CPL3 filter can be combined with CPL1 to reduce light intake from six to nine stops.

I really like this. It took me a long time to get past the idea that a matte box alone could be so inexpensive. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a $2500 matte box but for what it is its really great. I was looking for a way to control the exposure on three cameras for interview shoots without spending a ton on filters and matte boxes. It has now replaced my midd level matte box. My only complaint is that it should have one more stage. The magnetic, detachable configuration seems to lend itself to this possibility, but alas there is no middle stage available. Also, the stronger polarizer that makes up the 6-10 stop variable ND should be sold separately and not just along with the 0 and 1 strength that this already comes with.

The SmallRig 95 mm Matte Box Kit with CPL/VND Filter Set has two 5.65” filter Trays BH #SM5011 and the SmallRig Star-Trail Lightweight Multifunctional Modular Matte Box VND Filter Bundle BH #SM3645 has Four x 5.65” Filter Trays. Moreover, the Star-Trail BH #SM3645 comes with 15 mm rod support included.

Can the SmallRig BH #SM5011 use both 5.65” filter trays at the same time while still retaining the hood of the matte box?

No, the SmallRig 95mm Matte Box Kit with CPL/VND Filter Set can only use one 4x5.65" stage at a time.
