Nikon Z50 II Mirrorless Camera
A Compact Powerhouse for Discovery and Play
A powerful yet compact mirrorless system made for rising creators, the Nikon Z50 II Mirrorless Camera combines a 20.9MP APS-C CMOS sensor and an interchangeable lens mount with a host of flagship features and compatibility with the entire NIKKOR Z lens lineup to elevate your content beyond the smartphone.
20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor & EXPEED 7 Image Processor
The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is paired with the same EXPEED 7 image-processing engine found in its flagship, full-frame brethren to provide a versatile mixture of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, fast, AI-powered autofocus, and full-resolution continuous shooting up to 30 fps. At native values, a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 permits working in a broad array of lighting conditions and can be further expanded up to ISO 204800 for extreme low-light conditions. The combination of resolution and sensor size also contributes to clean image quality and smooth color transitions with reduced noise throughout the sensitivity range.
Nikon's Most Advanced Autofocus
Using inherited algorithms and deep learning technology from the Z9, including sophisticated Subject Detection for nine different subject types, the Z50 II can recognize a variety of distinct subject types, ranging from humans to animals to airplanes to bicycles. The popular dedicated Bird Detection mode is also featured. When working in Auto-Area AF, these subjects will automatically be detected, focused on, and tracked to ensure sharp focus when the subject is moving across the frame.

Eye-Detection AF, specifically, has been tuned for improved accuracy and refined recognition of eyes in the scene and can also be used in conjunction with custom Wide-Area AF for different subject shapes and sizes.

Pre-Release Capture
The EXPEED 7 processor also unlocks Pre-Release Capture, a feature that helps make decisive moment shots easier by recording frames in a burst for up to a second prior to actually releasing the shutter. When this feature is activated, burst shooting will commence when the shutter is half-pressed, and the buffer will retain the frames after fully pressing the shutter.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Capable of recording more than just stills, the Z50 II has improved its video capture abilities as well, now supporting UHD 4K video recording up to 60 fps and Full HD recording up to 120 fps along with a Product Review mode, recording time limits up to two hours, a video self-timer feature, built-in electronic Vibration Reduction, and the ability to save movie files to the in-camera memory cards or an optional external recorder via HDMI out. In-camera time-lapse shooting is also possible with the ability to produce a finished UHD 4K video file directly from the camera.

A first for Nikon, the Z50 II is UAC and UAV compliant for live web-streaming. Additionally, you can now record 10-bit video internally with Nikon's N-Log LUT and use four new RED LUTs as well.

Color Control for Creators
Nikon has added a Picture Control button atop the Z50 II to make access to its 31 built-in presets available even in Auto mode. The color presets can now be overlaid in the rear LCD screen, giving you the ability to visualize the color shifts as you create. Creator Recipes built by fellow Nikon shooters are available through the Nikon Imaging Cloud and can be downloaded and integrated alongside the presets. Additionally, Nikon provides a one-year subscription to their Cloud Picture Controls software, so you can use your own presets with professional editing tools.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • A large 3.2" LCD touchscreen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a 180° flip-out articulating design, which benefits front-facing selfie captures, and offers more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control. The upgraded touchscreen now features the Touch FN option, which allows you to select the focus point with your fingertips.
  • The improved electronic viewfinder was redesigned for increased comfort in eye-level viewing. Using NIKKOR optics to guarantee a sharp, clear image, it is now twice as bright as its predecessor.
  • A built-in flash and a hot shoe allow you to introduce additional light into low-lit scenes, with a dedicated Night Portrait mode that optimizes a balanced exposure with available and additional light.
  • A headphone jack has been added, doubling as a terminal for Nikon's newly released and optional MC-DC3 Remote Release Cord, and the USB-C terminal provides both camera charging and USB power delivery. The camera retains the microphone and HDMI ports of its predecessor.
  • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity enables seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enable communication between the camera and a smart device, and the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter to display a live view image from the camera for working from a distance.
  • The included EN-EL25a rechargeable lithium-ion battery extends camera battery life, with in-camera charging also supported.
  • Single SD memory card slot supports the UHS-II protocol for quickly storing photo and video files.

Nikon NIKKOR Z DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ VR Lens (Nikon Z)
Power Zoom for Content Creators
An essential lens for content creators, vloggers, and live streamers, the NIKKOR Z DX 12-28mm f/3.5-5.6 PZ VR, from Nikon, is a versatile ultra-wide zoom featuring a compact design, consistent Power Zoom control, and a flexible focal length range.
Versatile Ultra-Wide Zoom
Perfect for single-person productions, day-in-the-life vlogs, and other styles of vlogging and content creation, this ultra-wide zoom has a highly useful and versatile focal length range that helps keep you in the frame while also showing your surroundings.
  • The 12mm end of the zoom range is ideal for gaining immersive and broad field views as well as for recording yourself within the scene from arm's length.
  • The 28mm end, while still wide, lets you punch into the scene for a more selective view while still retaining context of the scene.
  • Built for use on APS-C/DX-format cameras, this lens has an 18-42mm equivalent focal length range.
  • Extra-low dispersion and aspherical elements contribute to high sharpness and well-controlled distortion throughout the zoom range.
Power Zoom and Handling
The first Power Zoom lens for Nikon Z mirrorless cameras, this lens uses an internal linear motor to change between focal lengths, rather than a conventional ring or mechanical method of adjusting the zoom.
  • Power Zoom can be controlled using the dedicated ring on the body or via the magnification buttons on select Nikon Z cameras. Additionally, Power Zoom can also be controlled via the optional ML-L7 Bluetooth Remote, from the SnapBridge app, or when using NX Tether Software and the optional MC-N10 Remote Grip.
  • Compared to mechanical zooming methods, Power Zoom offers consistent and repeatable zooming speeds, along with silent and highly precise results, for continuity between takes.
  • Choose between 11 different Power Zoom speeds to suit your subject and shooting style needs.
Vibration Reduction and Autofocus
  • Benefitting handheld use for both photo and video shoots, 4.5 stop-effective Vibration Reduction helps to reduce the effects of camera shake when working in low light and steady takes recorded while walking.
  • Stepping AF motor delivers smooth and silent focusing performance to benefit both photo and video applications.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 7.5" suits working with close-up subjects and delivering a unique point of view when combined with the ultra-wide focal length range.
  • Internal focus and zoom design, coupled with a compact and lightweight profile, makes this lens an ideal choice when working from a gimbal.
  • Lens also features a dust- and drip-resistant design to protect against moisture and other elements.

Nikon Z50 II Reviews

Vastly improved from the Nikon Z 50

By Karola
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2026-05-19

I had the Nikon Z 50, and while that was a great little camera, the autofocus was sometimes struggling a bit. This version solved that problem, the autofocus is quick and precise. I love the added eye autofocus for people, animals etc. Image quality is superb (and I also own several full frame cameras). I mostly use the Sigma Z 30mm f1.4 lens on it and the pictures turn out beautiful every time. It is small, portable and convenient. Tiny drawback (but no dealbreaker): Only one card slot. But so far, in 10 years no card has ever malfunctioned for me, so I am not too worried about that. All in all, really amazing camera for the price!

Great Combination of Old-School Manual and New-School Auto

Having been a hobby/school photographer in high school and college, I was hoping to reconnect with the hobby since my kids are getting into sports and my current phone camera is pretty meh. The last "real" camera I owned was a Minolta XG-M, but I've had a few digital point and shoots in the 00s, and of course I've attempted to take nice pictures with my phones over the last 15 years. My kids are getting into sports, and trying to take pictures of that with my phone have been frustrating. So I started cross-shopping a ton of different spec phones. I started with point-and-shoots again, but those were unnecessarily expensive for what you get, due to the form factor. Then I was looking at crossovers, like the Panasonic Lumix FZ80D, which seemed like quite a steal. But then I started looking at frame/lense cameras, and realized there really wasn't any getting around it. I settled on the Z50ii because it had the best price to features ratio of any of the cameras I looked at. It's the latest tech iteration (mirrorless), has Nikon's newest processor (EXPEED 7) which is great for tracking action, has access to all of the latest lenses, and doesn't break the bank with the bundled 16-50mm and 50-250mm lenses to get my started. It also does a good job of covering all of the bases for things I want to photograph, like my kids sports, nature/wildlife, architecture, automotive, street. Again, it's not the BEST at all of those things, but it does a solid job, and will allow me to grow back into the hobby without the much steeper investment in a higher-end camera. And I can add lenses as needed, and when I eventually graduate to a higher-end camera, my glass will still be relevant. It's quick and responsive, and generally stays out of the way when I want to switch to a manual mode. I've had it a week and keep looking for excuses to go use it. I can't wait for softball games to start this summer and football games to start this fall!

No, the Nikon Z50 II Mirrorless Camera does not have in-camera focus stacking. There is a feature called Focus Shift Shooting for focus bracketing, which automatically takes a series of photos at different focus distances, but they must be combined in postproduction with a computer.
