ARRI Codex Compact Drive Overview

Save on the cost of individual drives with the economical ARRI CODEX Compact Drive Set 1TB from B&H. This kit bundles six compact, durable SSDs for recording with your ALEXA Mini LF or ALEXA 35 camera. Each drive's full 1TB capacity is available for recording both ARRIRAW and ProRes without needing to reformat or switch drives.

Each compact drive works without a driver or license and features a sustained write speed of up to 8 Gb/s. Using a Compact Drive Adapter allows you to mount the drives on an existing SXR Capture Drive Dock (Mac only) or any other SXR Capture Drive hardware from CODEX. Please note that a drive firmware update may be needed before using the Compact Drive in your ALEXA Mini LF or ALEXA 35 camera.

Note:
A drive firmware update may be needed before using the Compact Drive in your ALEXA Mini LF or ALEXA 35 camera.
File Access
  • ARRI cameras use the ARRI UDF file system to store the original camera files on a CODEX Compact Drive. ARRI UDF can be accessed freely with standard operating system software without needing additional software.
  • CODEX Compact Drives can be accessed with the versatile Compact Drive Reader (USB-C), the high-speed Compact Drive Dock (Thunderbolt 3), or an existing SXR Capture Drive Dock or a CODEX Vault that has been upgraded to accept the new drives with a cost-effective Compact Drive Adapter.
Note:
This set does not include a carrying case or foam cutout.
High-Density Encoding
  • Supported by major studios and many standard post-production applications, the lossless CODEX HDE (High-Density Encoding) standard reduces ARRIRAW files by about 40%.
  • After decoding, HDE files result in a bit-for-bit match to the original file, saving you time and storage requirements.
  • Use the free, downloadable CODEX Device Manager software to encode ARRIRAW data from ALEXA series cameras prior to the ALEXA 35 (Mac only).
  • Download the ARRIRAW HDE Transcoder software to encode ALEXA 35 ARRIRAW data to HDE MFX clips (macOS, Windows, and CentOS 6).

ARRI Codex Compact Drive Reviews

Expensive But Worth It

Expensive card, as expected. 2TB is worth it though. Get the full recording abilities and never have issues.

Room for improvement

We are owner/operators based in Phoenix. We have 4 of these 1TB Codex cards for our Mini LF. Had issues early on with the camera not recognizing the media when mounted. No reason or pattern, just once in awhile it would just disappear. Occasionally you would get recording errors as well and would need to change cards to continue with your day. Arri updated firmware which eliminated most of the problems (Sup 7.0), but occasionally we will still get a glitch and the card says there is a problem and wants to be re-formatted. Yikes! Thankfully, we've yet to loose 1 piece of data so that's a good thing. They get SUPER hot when recording - just FYI when you pull them out of the camera they almost burn your fingertips. Ok, now 15 months into owning these cards (minus the downtime of Covid +/- 4 months (1 year warranty)) one of them is not recognized by the camera or computer at all. Completely dead. After 2 months of waiting for an update to service (sent back to Codex via Arri) we're pretty much faced with a $1000 dollar/6 week repair or a $200 off a replacement card. Amazing eh? This level of camera should not have this bad of service. At least an offer for a loaner card would have been nice, but no. Price on the cards is what it is. It's not like you have any other option right? If you want to use the LF, your gonna have to take the plunge. We also own RED products and have had amazing success with the RED SSD Mags since the DSMC1 days all the way to today- DSMC2. Wish Codex could get this small but massively important piece of equipment dialed in. Having this many issues in this short of time makes me nervous, hence the 3 star review. Alex

Are these compatible with the older Alexa SXT? Or the Alexa LF? Do they make an adapter?
Asked by: Brenton
The adapter cannot be used in the camera (neither SXT or LF) but only in the SXR readers, in which they have give you the fastest download possible. And it's a way to leverage use of Codex Vault2 and/or Capture + Transfer Dock which has built in SXR reader
