Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 Overview

The Take-Anywhere Wide-Angle Zoom
Capture high-quality video content and still imagery on the go with the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM Lens from Canon. Adding to an already impressive array of RF-mount lenses, the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 is the smallest and lightest RF zoom lens yet. Complementing its compact form factor is a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture, enabling superb bokeh and consistent low-light performance. Driven by a leadscrew-type STM motor, this lens delivers fast and quiet autofocusing performance with accurate subject tracking. Built-in image stabilization helps create noticeably sharper handheld images. Contributing to its impressive optical construction are four Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) elements and two aspherical elements, which help reduce chromatic aberrations and allow for a more compact design. Weather-resistant durability akin to an L-series lens is offered, giving users peace of mind when shooting in harsher environments.
Superb Optical Construction
Ensuring excellent image quality from edge-to-edge and enhanced contrast, four Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) elements and two aspherical elements are utilized for the lens's complex optical design, which is comprised of 16 elements in 13 groups.

To effectively reduce ghosting, prevent lens flare, and produce accurate color reproduction, Canon utilizes its Super Spectra Coating (SSC) on the lens glass.

A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes dreamlike bokeh and pleasing background and foreground blur.

Optimized Image Stabilization
Providing 5.5 stops of correction automatically for cameras without IBIS and up to 8 stops when used in coordination with a compatible camera's built-in stabilization system, the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 helps create sharper imagery while used handheld. Also, while recording video, users will experience minimal focusing breathing due to the lens's leadscrew-type STM motor.
L-Series Equivalent Quality
Proving itself as more than just a compact zoom, the RF 16-28mm f/2.8 matches the build quality of Canon's premium L-series lenses, which excel in creating images with high resolution and rich contrast. Coupling this high-end optical design and durable weather-resistant exterior with a markedly small form factor solidifies this zoom as a standout option that affords you mobility without compromising on detail.

Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 Reviews

Im very concerned about quality and weight. Days are over with the heavy lenses just to have image quality. Not only is this glass quality its also light weight, you can go anywhere with it without feeling bogged down with heavy gear. No need to spend more unless you are going to stay stationary. Gone are the days of over priced glass only for quality today we have glass that are affordable and light weight without sacrificing quality. This is the wide angle glass that is in the same lane as the L glass.

Excellent everyday wide zoom

I purchased both the RF 16–28mm f/2.8 and the RF 28–70mm f/2.8. They serve different purposes, and I simply find myself enjoying the 16–28mm focal range more in my own work. Very sharp with fast autofocus. You would never feel limited by the fact that this is a non-L lens in real-world use. In terms of image quality and performance, it honestly feels like an L-series lens. The only thing you need to get used to is extending the lens before shooting. There are a lot of negative comments online, but I don’t think many of those people have actually used it. If you’re looking for a reliable everyday wide zoom that can handle real professional work, this lens will not disappoint.

Would this lens be good for astrophotography? or would the RF 24mm f1.4 L VCM be better?
Asked by: Lynn
The Canon RF 16-28mm f/2.8 IS STM Lens is a very good lens for astrophotography having a wide angle of view and wide aperture that is great in low light. The RF 24mm f1.4 L VCM is not as wide angle, but it can still work. You just won't be able to place as much of the night sky in the image. It has a wider 1.4 aperture that will be even better in low light at high ISOs. Canon lenses are known to have some coma aberrations. That is when the stars look like arrows instead of dots in the corners. You may want to look at some lenses from Samyang/Rokinon as they have less coma usually, but are manual focus only.
