Sigma BF Overview

Beauty is Radically Simple
An intuitive tool designed to radically simplify imagemaking, the 24.6MP full-frame Sigma BF Mirrorless Camera, reimagines the high-end digital camera interface to emphasize ease of use. The L-mount, hybrid-AF body also boasts 6K video capabilities, resulting in a camera that produces high-quality imagery at will.
Sleek, Intuitive Design
The Sigma BF marks a turning point in mirrorless camera design. Every point of user interface from body to screen has been reconceived to streamline the image creation process, allowing users unprecedented access to the beauty unfolding in front of the lens.
Streamlined UI
The primary user interface of the live-view rear touchscreen has been redesigned for distraction-free shooting, where exposure settings like shutter speed, aperture, ISO sensitivity, EV compensation, and color mode all find their natural home. The live-view itself has been streamlined to allow shooters maximum focus on their subject, while a small status monitor above the rear dial pad clearly displays the active settings. All other options and settings are accessible via three simple menu screens.
Physical Design
The Sigma BF's forward-looking physical design concentrates all controls into just three buttons: a dial, a shutter release, and a power button. A rear dial pad allows further navigational control. All of these physical controls are pressure-sensitive haptics-driven, giving the user intuitive response to their touch. The camera also features a first-of-its-kind "unibody" build, as each camera is carved from a single block of aluminum, yielding a balanced, uniform weight distribution. A thumb grip in the upper right corner adds a small but crucial ergonomic element for handling the camera.
Performance
A 24.6MP full-frame, backside-illuminated CMOS sensor powers the camera's high-end imagery. The camera has a wide dynamic range, a native ISO sensitivity of 100-102400 expandable on the low end to ISO 6, and the large sensor which benefits both low-light performance and low depth-of-field effects. Continuous shooting is possible at up to 8 fps, and the camera produces 14-bit DNG lossless RAW files in addition to JPEGs. A hybrid phase detection and contrast detection autofocus ensures quick and accurate focusing. Additionally, remote shutter release is possible with the optional CR-51 cable release.
Internal Storage
One of the notable features of the Sigma BF is its 230GB of internal storage, translating to more than 14,000 JPEG files, 4,300 uncompressed RAW files, or 2.5 hours of video. Additionally, a USB-C port offers data-transfer speeds of 10 Gb/s for external storage.
Video Capabilities
The Sigma BF can record video in up to 6K 30 fps and reaches up to 120 fps when shot in Full HD. The camera also supports L-Log color grading and HVEC encoding. Electronic image stabilization is supported when shooting video, benefitting smooth footage capture, and on a full battery the camera can record continuously for an hour. A built-in microphone atop the camera captures stereo sound, with support for an external microphone or headphone output. The USB-C terminal also allows users to output video and use the Sigma BF as a webcam.
L-Mount Compatibility
Sigma is a member of the L-Mount Alliance, and the BF's L-mount for lenses affords users access to the broad range of high-quality lenses from Sigma, Panasonic, and Leica.
Color Modes
The Sigma BF comes pre-loaded with 13 different Color modes, allowing users to apply color filters to their imagery for expanded creativity: Standard, Rich, Calm, Powder Blue, Warm Gold, Teal and Orange, FOV Classic Blue, FOV Classic Yellow, Forest Green, Sunset Red, Cinema, 709 Look, and Monochrome.

Sigma BF Reviews

Beautiful/FRUSTRATION

I wanted a nice everyday carry camera to take on daily walks, to an occasional event like a local parade or a park, or even to take to restaurants here and there. I already own a Leica Q3, a Nikon ZF, a Sony A7CR, and more. I admit that, besides just loving photography, I have always loved various gadgets, especially different cameras. :) I was drawn to the BF because, to me, it really does look and feel awesome in hand and is built like a tank. Felt like I JUST WANTED to use it vs the other mostly all look-alike cameras I have. Anyway, my likes aside, I SO much wanted to love this Sigma BF. I shoot RAW + JPEG always. For an EDC camera, JPEGs are important, I feel, as unlike using a camera for a great vacation or a real photo shoot, etc I don't / didn't want to have to edit nearly every photo once I came back home from a casual walk as example, color mostly and even contrast. I was GREATLY disappointed in the JPEGs on the BF, no matter how I tried to tweak each color profile. Greens have a strange yellow cast to them; auto WB and even metering never seemed very consistent at all, and something as simple as a YELLOW sunflower was so difficult to capture, be it in standard mode, forest green, well, any of their built-in profiles. Raws? Looks FANTASTIC, but what a pain... again for an EDC camera, which was MY purpose. The screen, as many have mentioned, is horribly dim in most outdoor light. Obviously, I read reviews first but thought I'd be ok with it. Picture an $89 Samsung phone...where you can't really see the screen outside... well, that's the BF's screen. Indoors, the screen is beautiful, detailed, with what seems like very accurate color... but outdoors you PRAY. Autofocus is excellent, as is eye detection, a big positive. Another nutty quirk was for auto ISO, at least in aperture priority mode. BF LETS you choose a range...for example, ISO 100-12,500, whatever. The thing is, even if you are set to Auto iso the iso will NEVER drop below iso 400. WHY then let you set the parameters!! Battery life is overall abysmal, but I turned the camera off after nearly every shot, so that wasn't an issue for me. The interface, oddly enough, becomes VERY intuitive. I just wish you could control more or program a few shortcuts. Feel? I actually liked how it felt in hand. I dunno about all these people saying it's sharp or you can drop it easily. I did put it in a camera bag often, but carrying it even 10-15 minutes or more at a time in hand seemed overall just fine to me. I did LOVE, LOVE the built-in hard drive VS needing an SD card. It was somehow very freeing; just grab the camera and go. I used a small USB SSK flash that had a USB-C on one end. Transferring photos to the flash drive took seconds; LOVED that feature. In the end, at least for me, this thing is just WAY too expensive vs so many other cameras that can certainly have the same or better image quality and likely much better JPEGs if you aren't into editing almost every picture to get more natural colors, no matter which color profile you choose. I paired the BF with Sigma's 35mm Silver Contemporary lens, and the lens is fantastic. The camera to ME, looked and felt amazing- Leica-like, but quirk after quirk after so many compromises, and the DIM screen? Well, for me, this camera was so FRUSTRATING to use and enjoy overall. If you like really quirky cameras, this is IT...It truly is beautiful but FRUSTRATING and overpriced! - IMO

It is difficult to describe this camera as the spec answer is form over function. Essentially an A7iii with 6k in a beautiful frame and less controls. There is no spec that is superior especially for the price yet it feels timeless. What it lacks gives it character and forces you to reevaluate photography and how and why you do things. It’s intentional. It forces you to be intentional. No flash from the lack of mechanical shutter. No ibis. No evf. No control dials or menu. No sad card. No ports but one. No hotshoe for cold shoe for that matter. The autofocus is awesome for portraits and street and landscapes and really anything short of action and wildlife with a tele. The colors are the best I’ve seen. You either want to look cool and it’s a show piece or you are over saturated with gear from being professional for too long and want to not act on habit but out of creativity again. This camera makes me feel like film school. If you want specs or intermediate this isn’t the camera for you. But it’s quite beautiful and made me reconstruct my entire business as my A camera. Probably foolishness but that is part of it. It’s literally in the name. It either appeals to you or it doesn’t. Ultimately cameras don’t really improve in ways that make my photography better. Haven’t in 8 years. Never thought taking features away would be the answer but it is. Small footprint means more candid moments with clients. Less gear. Only true drawback is battery life. It doesn’t come with external charger so more batteries means getting one of those too. Not ideal but all in not so bad once you’re set up. Video quality is great too. It really is beautiful and people really do approach. There is a very human element of design that many others are missing. If you’re reading this then just pull the trigger. But be intentional as you will be playing this cameras game as it will not be playing yours.

Will other lens brands fit? Can I use a canon RF lens on the Sigma BF? Thank you
Asked by: Steven
With my Sigma fp I could use Sigma's Canon MC-11 EF adapter to use Canon lenses, but I mostly used mine with various adapters for vintage lenses without any control of the lenses. It's likely that adapter would work with this model, but if it's a deal breaker, wait for confirmation before buying the camera and adapter.

What neck strap works with Sigma BF?
Asked by: Rosanne
The Sigma BF Mirrorless Camera (Black) is designed to use a wrist strap. The only neck type strap that can work with that is sling strap that attaches to the tripod thread on the bottom like these, BlackRapid Curve Breathe Bundle (Special 50th Anniversary Edition), BH #BLCBRTHBFR5, Peak Design Leash Camera Strap (Ash Gray), BH #PELAS3 and BlackRapid 10-Year Anniversary Edition Classic Retro RS-4 Camera Strap (Black), BH #BL481001. What a beautiful modern camera! Since Sigma decided to omit a hot shoe, is there an other way to trigger a flash?
Asked by: Erik
I feel that is important to note that without a mechanical shutter there would be no real point in having a hot shoe or flash. The flash and the shutter work together to provide the desired effect. Electronic shutters do not provide this functionality. Might as well just use a continuous light.

I assume there's no flash sync since I don't see a hot shoe or PC terminal???
Asked by: Donald
Even if it did have a hot shoe, it would not work well with a flash because it does not have a mechanical shutter to sync with. Anything without a mechanical shutter might as well use continuous lighting.
