SmallRig Camera Cage for Panasonic Lumix S1R ... Overview

Expand the capabilities of your Panasonic LUMIX mirrorless camera with the Camera Cage from SmallRig. Designed to securely mount onto the camera body, it provides a protective structure to attach all kinds of accessories via its 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads, two NATO rails on top and side, and two cold shoe mounts. Its three-point locking design prevents the camera from moving or twisting inside the cage. The cage can be used with the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 and DMW-XLR2 microphone adapters, and it is compatible with the optional SmallRig Top Lift Handle.

On-the-fly swaps from a tripod to a motorized gimbal or shoulder rig happen via the integrated Arca-type quick release base, and you can also utilize the quick disconnect (QD) socket as well as the 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threads on the bottom. The lightweight and durable aluminum cage is designed with ergonomics in mind, enabling shoots that last all day.

Expandability
Panasonic LUMIX cameras reach their full potential when combined with an array of monitors, larger batteries, lens hoods, etc. This cage enables you to attach lots of optional gear, far more than you would otherwise be able to use with your camera (available separately). These optional items attach via the 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threading, the two NATO rails, and the two cold shoe mounts, as well as the QD port and strap slots.

The cage can also be used with the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 and DMW-XLR 2 microphone adapters, and if a top handle is required, the SmallRig Top Lift Handle 3082 is compatible.

Secure Connections
The Arca-type quick release base holds your rig firmly in place when you need it but doesn't cause a delay when you need to swap camera supports. A three-point anti-twist locking method, including a built-in magnetic camera key, keeps your lens pointed straight downrange.

Not Just a Cage, It's a Tactical Vest for Your S1II

The Good: Three-point lock. Your camera sits like it's bolted down. No micro-movement during transport or when you're wrestling with accessories. That's peace of mind when you're running between setups. HawkLock H21 NATO rails. Top and left side rails mean you can slap on a monitor, handle, or whatever without hunting for the right screw thread. Quick-release means you're not playing thumb-screw Tetris. XLR compatibility. Works with the Panasonic DMW-XLR1 and DMW-XLR2 audio adapters. If you're doing interviews or location work, audio shouldn't be an afterthought. Arca-Swiss base plate included. Tripod mounts without needing a separate plate. One less thing to carry. Universal fit across the S-series. Also works with S5 II, S5 IIX, G9 II. Future-proof if you expand your kit. The Not-So-Good: Still adds heft. You're trading mobility for protection. Handheld all-day? Your wrists will notice. Standard matte black. Looks professional, but it's a fingerprint magnet. Keep a microfiber handy. No top handle included. Unlike the 4903 kit, you'll need to buy the handle separately if you want that extra grip option. Bottom Line: For the price, the 4902 is a workhorse. It's not flashy, but it does the job without the premium markup of the Black Mamba line. If you're building a modular rig and want solid protection without breaking the bank, this is your baseline. Pair it with the XLR handle and you've got a complete interview setup. Score: 8/10 — Solid foundation, upgrade as needed.

The first cage I bought from SmallRig was for my BMD Pocket 4K, back in 2019. It was one piece of CNC'd aluminum: no bolts or pieces. So is this. Other SmallRig cages may differ, but less is move, with no bolts to come loose. Glad they returned to their roots. And yes, like other brands, it integrates the camera strap holders to attach. Well done, at such a price!
