ZEISS SFL 10x50 Overview

Applying the principles of the SmartFocus Lightweight line to optics with large, light-hungry objective lenses, the Zeiss 10x50 SFL Binoculars combine ease of use with the premium optical quality ZEISS is known for. The SFL line uses slightly smaller objective lenses for a significant weight reduction from previous models, making a day of nature observation or sightseeing much more comfortable. Zeiss calls its SFL 50 series "50mm optics in a 42mm frame."

You'll enjoy the generous field of view for the big picture and the 5.9' close-focus distance for a good look at that nearby bird or butterfly. Extra-low dispersion glass with the famous T* coating delivers 90% light transmission for a beautiful image, even in the low light of dusk or dawn. The SFL is waterproof and nitrogen-filled to prevent internal fogging.

Lightweight Magnesium Chassis

Finally, a great pair of binoculars that gives great magnification and clarity while providing plenty of light without weighing 300 pounds. Patuxent Research Refuge in Laurel, MD (a D.C. suburb) hosted many White-throated and other birds during my 12/24/25 visit. A distant flock of birds appeared as small black dots silhouetted against the sky at the top of a distant tree. These binoculars brought them into clear range as a flock of Cedar Waxwings. The refuge seemed swamped by very flighty Whie-throated Sparrows. The clarity of the image compensated for the slightly narrower field of view than the field provided by 8 power binoculars. No difficulty at all targeting these small birds. The binoculars provided accurate color transmission, no distortion and clear views. The focusing wheel brought the birds into sharp view easily without the need to turn the wheel forever. The only difficulty, easy to overcome, was placing my hands in the correct position to use the focus wheel. These binoculars are slightly longer barreled than 8 by 42s. Best of all these do not cost both an arm and a leg - just an arm!!

These things are bright, have neutral colors, brilliant contrast, a wide field of view, are razor sharp, and ergonomically wonderful, with a silky smooth focus. They also have good eye relief if you wear glasses. The one and only downside to me is chromatic aberration. It's minimal in the center, but quickly builds towards the edges. I'm not very sensitive to it and you only see it in situations where you have an object silhouetted against a bright sky with the sun behind the subject. My understanding is that it's the trade-off you have to live with in order to have a 10x50 binocular that's this compact, light, and affordable. In order to better control the chromatic aberration I think you would need to go to fluorite lenses, which would be heavier and more expensive, and maybe a different optical design. There are always trade-offs, but in this case the trade-off is worth it for me. These are my new primary binoculars, bumping my Zeiss SFL 8x40 into second place.
