Magnus REX VT-5000 2-Stage Video Tripod with Fluid Head

The Magnus REX VT-5000 2-Stage Video Tripod with Fluid Head supports cameras and accessories weighing up to 17 pounds. The head accepts a sliding balance plate with 3.25" of adjustment. It features independent pan and tilt locks with variable fluid tilt drag and a 75mm leveling ball. Two 1/4"-20 accessory mounting holes are built into the head. The legs are made from aluminum and feature three sections with lever locks. The head and legs combination features a height range of 29 to 64.25" and folds to 32.6" long for transport and storage.

Dual-spiked feet and a mid-level spreader make an excellent combination for shooting on uneven terrain. The mid-level spreader has 4.25" of adjustment, allowing you to spread the legs wide for a more stable base. The spiked feet are suitable for use on exteriors and soft surfaces. When shooting on hard or delicate surfaces, the included rubber feet may give you a better grip and protect the surface from the spikes. Built into one of the legs is a hook on an elastic line to help secure the legs from opening accidentally when closed. An included padded bag carries your tripod legs and head, and it includes a shoulder strap for ease of carry.

Fluid Head
The head features a spring-loaded counterbalance with pan and tilt fluid drag. Tilt drag is variable and can be adjusted to provide more or less drag, allowing you to fine-tune the head to match the needs of the shot.
The sliding balance camera plate features a spring-loaded locating pin and supports both 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 camera tie-down screws (included).
The camera plate features 3.25" of travel, providing a wide range of movement to balance your camera on the head for optimum operation.
Two 1/4"-20 threaded accessory mounting holes are integrated into the head, and they allow you to mount a variety of accessories, including articulating arms and mounting brackets.
The head features two pan handle rosettes for left- or right-handed operation. One pan handle is included with the system, and it includes a rosette washer that helps protect the rosettes from stripping.
Tripod Legs
The included mid-level spreader is adjustable, allowing you to spread the legs for a more stable shot or draw them close to gain height. The legs can be closed with the spreader attached.
The legs feature independent leg spread and height adjustment, which is useful for working on even surfaces such as rocky terrain or stairs.
The legs feature dual-spiked feet that provide a solid purchase on soft surfaces when the legs are spread wide or extended to full height.
The rubber feet attach to the spiked feet for working on delicate or hard surfaces.
An elastic line with attached hook extends from the bottom of one of the legs, allowing you to secure the legs in a closed position for storage or transport.

Magnus VT-5000 Reviews

Best Bang for your Buck!

I purchased this tripod second hand about a year ago, and I can confidently say that this is the best value you will ever get through a tripod. I used to chew through tripods every few months, usually the cheap $50 things you get online. I finally took the leap to get a decent video tripod and found this model for sale in my area. As soon as I received it, I thought it was a $400 tripod. This is a very solidly built piece of equipment. All metal construction, adjustable spreaders and feet, and levers that confidently click the legs into place. This tripod has been dropped, knocked, left in heavy rain, splashed with dirt, and shaken going from place to place. It is almost exclusively used outside. Recently one of the levers wasn't clicking in right. I thought the poor thing finally gave out like the dozen tripods that came before it. Turns out, these tripods are also very easy to service. Each lever assembly has a small hex screw on the back that I had to tighten up. Now the legs click like new! The adjustable bowl makes balancing the fluid head a breeze. What used to take me minutes of clicking legs in and out of place took 15 seconds with the bowl. This has saved me many times when I needed to move my tripod to catch sudden events. The fluid head itself is good but has its shortcomings. You can only adjust tension in the vertical pan, not horizontal. Panning motion is quite smooth but can be a little bit sticky and jerky with telephoto lenses and heavy setups. I found that putting tension in my arm reduced the apparent stickiness. You have to remember; this is a $200 tripod!! The bowl lets you swap out for another fluid head if you plan on upgrading in the future. The fluid head is still competent for 99% of shoots, and perfect for still shots. I use cameras without any IBIS on ground next to rolling freight trains, and found the camera held almost perfectly still as a fully loaded train was going by. I think that there is no tripod out there that offers the same value. You're getting excellent build quality, plenty of adjustments, good repairability, reliability, and mobility to upgrade in the future. For those looking to try professional tripods, but not ready to drop thousands, this is as close as you can get!

Exceeded my expectations

This tripod exceeded my expectations wildly. I’ve owned the lighter weight version for years and it still works great despite the abuse I’ve put it through. I purchased this one thinking it would be a thicker version of my other tripod - instead it’s a whole new level of equipment. Whoever engineered this spent a serious amount of time placing knobs for every configuration possible, spikes for the ground, wire clips, etc. the thing is like 6 feet tall and even has a padded carry case with clips and extra pockets. It’s almost embarrassing how excited I got when I unboxed it. Magnus has exceeded my expectations yet again and despite the relatively low price point (compared to options at my local video stores) it is extremely high quality. These things are inexpensive, can take a beating, and do their job perfectly. I’d recommend this tripod or the magnus brand to anyone.
