Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Overview

A Bright, Wide-to-Normal APS-C Zoom
Sigma introduces a new zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with an f/1.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range, the 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens. Featuring prime-like optical performance and video-friendly design and functionality, its wide-to-normal focal range means a lighter kit bag without surrendering image quality.
Design and Performance
The lens features a total of 17 elements in 11 groups, with four aspherical and four Special Low Dispersion elements to minimize flare and ghosting and suppress various aberrations. This results in an optical performance that meets or exceeds that of other Sigma Art lenses, including the 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens. Along with its 11-blade, rounded diaphragm, the design promotes sharpness and a large, smooth bokeh when used wide open.

In addition to the f/1.8 maximum aperture, the lens also maintains an 11" minimum focusing distance across the entire zoom range. It achieves a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8 at its longest focal length, increasing depth of field and versatility in tight spaces.

Video Production
Designed with video creation in mind, the lens' bright f/1.8 aperture and wide-to-normal zoom range make it a versatile tool ideal for single-shooter, run-and-gun setups. An internal zoom design maintains the overall length during use, making it easy to balance on gimbals. The design also suppresses focus breathing for smooth movement across the focal range. Sigma's high-speed, high-response linear actuator autofocus remains both quiet and accurate, while manual focusing is improved with click-and-lock mechanisms.

May I use that lens on full frame camera?

May I use that lens on full frame camera?
Asked by: Zbigniew
Although the Sigma 16-40 is made for APS-C cameras, all Sony Full Frame cameras have an APS-C mode. This allows the use of APS-C lenses on Sony full frame cameras, although the size of the image produced will be lower than the native sensor produces. For example, the A7R5 has a 61 megapixel sensor and creates a 26.6 megapixel image. There will also be the standard 1.5 zoom factor that will apply to the lens in this mode. So the 17-40mm lens will act like a 25mm-60mm lens.

internal zoom? non extending?

internal zoom? non extending?
Asked by: E
No, the Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Sony E-mount does not extend when zoomed. It features an internal zoom design, meaning the physical length of the lens remains constant throughout the zoom range. This is especially beneficial for video work and gimbal use, as it maintains balance and avoids shifting the center of gravity.

When used for video on a full frame sensor will it just become a 25-60mm or will it just not work? Looking to use with ronin 4d
Asked by: Kyle
Since the Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens is a crop sensor lens it cannot spread the light over the entire image sensor of a full frame camera. As a result this lens will exhibit vignetting unless the camera is set to crop mode.

Asked by: Kyle
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens (Sony E) is not a full-frame lens. It will either crop the image if your camera shoots full-frame video or give you a vignette. It is best to use a full-frame lens.

Is this lens fully compatible with a RED Komodo-X?
Asked by: DAVID
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens (Canon RF) has not been officially tested with the RED Komodo-X RF cinema camera at this time. Approved lenses normally are Canon like the 15-35mm listed below: Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens (Canon RF) BH #CA1535RF

Does the lens, being a native RF mount now, work well with Canon IBIS and how many stops of stabilization can we expect ?
Asked by: Andreas
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Canon RF mount is compatible with APS-C cameras. The lens doesn't have stabilization but you can expect around 4 to 5 stops of stabilization when paired with the Canon R7 Mirrorless Camera, the only Canon APS-C body that features IBIS.

Can this lens be adapted to an EF mount camera?

Can this lens be adapted to an EF mount camera?
Asked by: Richard
No, you cannot adapt RF to EF because RF lenses, such as the Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens (Canon RF), are designed to sit as close to the sensor as possible, and the lack of a mirror makes it impossible to adapt an RF lens to an EF or DSLR body.
