Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Overview

A Bright, Wide-to-Normal APS-C Zoom
Sigma introduces a new zoom lens for APS-C mirrorless cameras with an f/1.8 aperture throughout the entire zoom range, the 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens. Featuring prime-like optical performance and video-friendly design and functionality, its wide-to-normal focal range means a lighter kit bag without surrendering image quality.
Design and Performance
The lens features a total of 17 elements in 11 groups, with four aspherical and four Special Low Dispersion elements to minimize flare and ghosting and suppress various aberrations. This results in an optical performance that meets or exceeds that of other Sigma Art lenses, including the 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art lens. Along with its 11-blade, rounded diaphragm, the design promotes sharpness and a large, smooth bokeh when used wide open.

In addition to the f/1.8 maximum aperture, the lens also maintains an 11" minimum focusing distance across the entire zoom range. It achieves a maximum magnification ratio of 1:4.8 at its longest focal length, increasing depth of field and versatility in tight spaces.

Video Production
Designed with video creation in mind, the lens' bright f/1.8 aperture and wide-to-normal zoom range make it a versatile tool ideal for single-shooter, run-and-gun setups. An internal zoom design maintains the overall length during use, making it easy to balance on gimbals. The design also suppresses focus breathing for smooth movement across the focal range. Sigma's high-speed, high-response linear actuator autofocus remains both quiet and accurate, while manual focusing is improved with a knurled control ring.

Can I use this lens on the Canon R8?
Asked by: Mandi
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens (Canon RF) (B&H# SI1740F18CR) may be attached to the Canon EOS R8 Mirrorless Camera (B&H# CAER8). Having said that, the image that can be viewed and recorded (whether in photo or video form) will include slightly less than half of the area in the center of the sensor. That area will be equivalent to the size of an APS-C Canon sensor. So, while it may be used, please keep in mind that it is not possible to use this lens to capture full frame photos on that (or any other full frame camera) regardless of sensor size.

Does the lens, being a native RF mount now, work well with Canon IBIS and how many stops of stabilization can we expect ?
Asked by: Andreas
The Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens for Canon RF mount is compatible with APS-C cameras. The lens doesn't have stabilization but you can expect around 4 to 5 stops of stabilization when paired with the Canon R7 Mirrorless Camera, the only Canon APS-C body that features IBIS.

Can this lens be adapted to an EF mount camera?

Can this lens be adapted to an EF mount camera?
Asked by: Richard
No, you cannot adapt RF to EF because RF lenses, such as the Sigma 17-40mm f/1.8 DC Art Lens (Canon RF), are designed to sit 1" closer to the sensor than the EF lens mount on a SLR or DSLR. The EF mount's greater distance from the sensor leaves room for the mirror to move up and down (that area is known as the "mirror box"). Thus on an SLR or DSLR the lens would be mounted too far away to be able to focus properly.
