Can I use the TR-004 as a backup drive for my Synology DS920+ via USB?
Asked by: Richard
Once the raid is configured, the TR004 acts as a conventional USB external drive, with no additional driver required. I configured it as RAID10 and using as a plain vanilla USB external with Windows 10. Ergo, if your DS920+ supports external USB drives for backups it should work.

Do you need to insert 4 drives off the bat, Or can you start with let's say 2? And if you can start with 2, do have to add 2 more at the same time, or can you add a 3rd, and then wait a while(like a year) and then add a 4th?
Asked by: eric
I believe you can start with just one. Personally I’m running two in RAID 1 via the dip switches on the back. They give the ability to run software RAID as well.

If one HDD fails (in RAID 3, 5 or 10), can it be replaced without losing the data on the rest of the RAID?

Yes, you can replace a drive in the Ubiquiti Networks UISP Cable Carrier Cat 5e Shielded Outdoor Ethernet Cable (Black, 1000') in the event of a drive malfunction and not lose any data when running in RAID 1/5/6/10

B&H (or QNAP), Is it necessary to "lock" the trays/drives for use? Will the drives function without "locking" with the "keys?"

Locking the drive bays on the QNAP TR-004 4-Bay USB 3.2 Gen 1 RAID Expansion Enclosure, B&H # QNTR004US, is optional; the enclosure will still work if you do not lock the drive trays.

I can not get this thing to mount. It doesn't appear in the Disk Utility. It the QNAP software kind find it. It keeps spooling up and shutting down repeatedly. I'll get "Disc Not Ejected properly" messages. What's with it?
Asked by: A.
I had no problems. If few more suggestions - The lights on the front of the device are helpful. If you have a good USB connection to your computer the "USB" light will be blue. All the other lights will be solid green for the power and each drive inserted. If you have a disk that is being built, both the Ready light and HDD light for that disk will alternate between green and red (or orange - I don't remember which). Note, for each RAID group you are going to set up, the drives should be identical. - Assuming all the lights are correct for the disks you have installed, try plugging into a different USB port (especially, prefer to plug the device directly to the PC rather than some external hub) - At this point, the QNAP External RID Manager software should be able to detect the device and find it. Using the "Action" dropdown, select "Locate" and the device will start beeping and you will know you have a connection between the PC and the device that can interact. - The use the RAID manager to verify the types of drives you have installed
