SmallRig RM 40C Reviews

A lot of light for the price.

Bought this to replace a broken Aputure MC. It's bigger, but will still fit in a jacket pocket. It's all plastic, and feels a bit cheap, but it puts out a lot of light. A few design issues that could be better: the power switch is right next to the mode switch, so I often find myself hitting the wrong switch. And the magnet connection for the grid and diffuser isn't strong enough to keep you from knocking it off if you bump it. Overall, it's a good budget option, but it's not built to survive much abuse.

Very bright, but...

I couldn’t go less than 5 stars because it does exactly what it advertises, and it does it quite well. It’s very bright, has a full range of dimming, and offers the full spectrum of colors to play with. The integrated 1/4-20 female mount is a nice touch. The magnet on the back is fairly weak, so you can’t reliably attach it to a vertical surface like a wall, but it works fine on horizontal metal surfaces and won’t slide around. As for the front attachments, it comes with both a honeycomb grid and a diffuser. They can be used together, independently, or not at all. Using both does cut down the output quite a bit, as expected. Using them separately still gives you a very strong light source, and with no attachments at all, it’s an insanely bright light for such a small form factor. The “but”: the fan is very noticeable. You don’t really hear the fan motor itself, but you do hear the airflow it creates, so it’s not a mechanical noise. Fan speed adjusts with output intensity, which gives you some control, but if this light is close to your audio source, it’s something to be aware of—you could easily pick it up on a mic.
