Nikon Zfc Mirrorless Camera (Silver)

Blending classic looks with modern performance, the Nikon Zfc checks off all the boxes on a content creator's wish list: stylish and sleek retro design, impressive image quality with the Z mirrorless system flexibility, and it's optimized for vlogging and video applications.

The Zfc is a DX-format mirrorless camera sporting a 20.9MP CMOS sensor, which pairs with EXPEED 6 image processing to realize quick shooting performance up to 11 fps, UHD 4K video recording at 30p, and sensitivity up to ISO 51200. Despite its classic looks, this camera is updated for contemporary content creation and features a fully articulating touchscreen LCD, supports live streaming, is compatible with external microphones, and has an advanced 209-point AF system with full-time subject tracking and eye-detection AF.

Focusing on the physical design, the Zfc stands out as a clear reference to Nikon's classic SLR film camera heritage, and features several familiar physical controls on the body, including dedicated dials to adjust ISO, shutter speed, and exposure compensation. The body also features a 2.36m-dot OLED EVF and supports SnapBridge wireless connectivity for pairing with a mobile device for remote camera control. Also benefitting on-location shoots and longer takes, the Zfc also supports in-camera battery charging and on-the-go power via the USB C port.

20.9MP DX-Format CMOS Sensor and EXPEED 6 Image Processor
The DX-format 20.9MP CMOS sensor is paired with the EXPEED 6 image processor to provide a versatile mixture of high sensitivity, nuanced image quality, and fast overall performance. At native values, a sensitivity range from ISO 100-51200 permits working in a broad array of lighting conditions, and can be further expanded up to ISO 204800 for extreme low-light conditions. The mixture of resolution and sensor size also contributes to clean image quality and smooth color transitions with reduced noise throughout the sensitivity range. In addition to benefitting image quality, the EXPEED 6 processor also affords a wealth of speed throughout the camera system, including a top full-resolution continuous shooting rate of 11 fps.

Besides imaging, the sensor's design also incorporates a 209-point hybrid autofocus system, which uses both phase-detection and contrast-detection methods to quickly and accurately acquire focus for both stills and video applications. This focusing system also supports Eye Detection AF, which uses facial recognition to help lock focus onto subjects' eyes.
UHD 4K Video Recording
Capable of recording more than just stills, the Zfc supports UHD 4K video recording at up to 30 fps and Full HD recording at up to 120 fps, for slow-motion effects, along with the ability to save movie files to the in-camera memory card. In-camera time-lapse shooting is also possible.
Heritage Design with Intuitive Functions
Precision carved aluminum dials with engraved markings and mechanical controls for shutter speed, ISO, and exposure compensation. Intuitive functions also enable easy access to auto mode, quick settings, and the menu help guide.
Body Design and Connectivity
  • A large 3" 1.04m-dot LCD screen is available for bright, clear, and vivid image playback and live view shooting. The screen has a vari-angle design, which benefits front-facing selfie captures, and it is also a touchscreen for more intuitive operation, navigation, and settings control.
  • A 2.36m-dot electronic finder is present for comfortable eye-level viewing. It has a 1.02x magnification and uses NIKKOR optics to guarantee a sharp, clear image.
  • A robust magnesium alloy chassis is both dust- and weather-resistant to benefit working in harsh climates and inclement conditions.
  • Built-in SnapBridge connectivity to enable seamless transfer of low-resolution imagery as well as remote shooting capabilities. BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) and Wi-Fi enables communication between the camera and a smart device and, additionally, the mobile device can remotely trigger the shutter and display a live view image from the camera to enable working from a distance.
  • Live streaming and web conferencing via separately purchased USB Type-C cable.
  • 3.5mm stereo mini-pin jack provides plug-in power
  • Included EN-EL25 rechargeable lithium-ion battery provides approximately 300 shots per charge.
  • Compatible with NIKKOR Z lenses as well as F-mount lenses using the separately purchased FTZ Mount Adapter.

Nikon Zfc Reviews

Very cool little camera. Nice hybrid of traditional and modern UI.

I bought the Zfc as a gift for my daughter as she had progressed in her photography beyond what her phone could do. The traditional UI with dials is clearly slower/less efficient than the modern interface but I also think it is more intuitive for a beginner. Add to that the cool factor - the camera just looks really great, almost exactly like an old Nikon film camera. It is light and compact. Picture quality is great.

Instantly a favorite.

Last summer I bought a Nikon Z8/Z 24-120 S kit from B&H. I added a Z 14-30 S, a Z 50 S, and a Z 100-400 S to the order also. It was a “once in a lifetime” purchase going from decades of Nikon F equipment to a Z system. The Z8 and the Z lenses are incredible and there is absolutely nothing to dislike about that outfit except for the weight. Shortly after that purchase I loaded it all, along with a carbon fiber tripod, a flash, and a laptop into a bag for our annual trip to the lake. That was in September and my arm still hurts from the strain of lifting that stuff into and out of the airliner’s overhead storage. When we got home, I decided to get a light weight Zfc as walk around and casual travel camera. I got the Zfc/Z 16-50mm DX kit from B&H. I am truly impressed with both the camera and the lens. In reviews people complained about the lack of shooting and custom menu memory banks, light unsubstantial feeling build quality, and control knob lock buttons. Nonsense! The “i” menu provides instant access to the functions that you may need to change quickly and setting the FN button to bring up the “MY MENU” page for menu options you use regularly makes for fairly fast and easy adjustments. The build quality is superb; it is light weight but solid. Is there some plastic used? Of course, but there is more external metal surface on the Zfc than on the Z8 or most other digital cameras today. The control knob lock buttons are a non-issue. Even with its excellent manual controls most users will seldom use them. They will seldom get past PAS, auto ISO, and control wheels for shutter and aperture. And those that do, like myself, will probably have no problem with them because we’ve used similar locks on film camera controls. I have not had an ASP-C camera since my D-200, and then, I always used full frame (FX) lenses to avoid lens edge issues. The Z 16-50 is the first DX lens I have ever owned, and I have been very impressed; any lens edge issues (distortion, vignetting, etc.) are corrected in-camera. And with the Zfc’s excellent noise reduction systems you can just let Auto ISO have its way with very little concern. The camera takes great, perfectly sharp photos with all of those wonderful attributes one expects from Nikon cameras and lenses. In fact, I just received a Z 50-250 DX lens to compliment my Zfc system. If is simply fantastic, and I highly recommend getting one as a partner for the Z 16-50 DX. An issue that has been rightfully reviewed is that the life of the EN-EL25 battery that comes with the camera is somewhat shorter than ideal. So, I highly recommend getting a second battery. Though, get the newer EN-EL25a, it has a longer life than the original EN-EL25 (1250mAh vs. 1120mAh). I have both, and the difference is noticeable. My only other concern about the Zfc is one that plagues many Nikon cameras; Nikon’s rubber is problematic. I have found that Nikon’s rubber access doors and grips swell over time (years). With grips the slight swelling is negligible, but the rubber access doors become somewhat difficult to fit back into their closed position as they age. Though, this is certainly not a deal breaker. The Zfc has only one rubber door covering the USB, HDMI, and Mic connection terminals. At this point it is very easy to manipulate, and I hope that it remains so. The camera’s grips, however, seem to be some form of synthetic leather that will probably last forever. In ending, if you are looking for an outstanding light weight camera outfit the Zfc and Nikon’s DX lenses are well worth considering. Its operating system, technology, and image capability all live up to the highest standards that Nikon is renowned for. And it is light and easy to carry around all day. With two lenses my Z8 covers focal lengths from 24mm to 400mm and weighs 2,915 g/6.4 lbs, while the Zfc and its two lenses cover 24mm to 375mm and only weighs 920 g/2 lbs. The Zfc is worth owning and B&H is the best place to buy your photo equipment.
