OWC StudioStack Overview

Enhance your Mac Studio or Mac mini with the fast, high-capacity, and stackable StudioStack Thunderbolt 5 Storage Hub from OWC / Other World Computing. Designed to edit 8K video, run AI models, and access files with speeds of up to 6302 MB/s, the StudioStack features one NVMe PCIe 4.0 slot that fits M.2 2280 SSDs, plus one 2.5/3.5" SATA III drive bay, each of which can accommodate a drive of your choice. The temperature controlled, variable speed cooling fan prevents overheating, while a Kensington Lock slot ensures security.

The StudioStack connects to your host system using an 80 Gb/s Thunderbolt 5 port that also supports a display bandwidth of up to 120 Gb/s. Other integrated ports include three Thunderbolt 5 ports and three 10 Gb/s USB 3.2 Gen 2 (3.1 Gen 2/3.1) ports that are backward compatible with USB 3.2 Gen 1 (3.1 Gen 1/3.0) and USB 2.0. Also featured is 60W of power delivery, power/activity LEDs, and compatibility with Windows, Mac, iPad, Linux, and ChromeOS operating systems.

If you don't have a system that supports Thunderbolt 5, the StudioStack will work with Thunderbolt 4/USB4 at speeds up to 3200 MB/s and with Thunderbolt 3 (Mac only) at speeds up to 2800 MB/s.

Stacked and Jacked Mac
Pump up your Mac Studio or Mac mini with a fast and high-capacity stackable hybrid storage innovation. Now you can flex your true form with increased storage capacity, data transfer speeds of up to 6302 MB/s that rival the latest Mac Studio models, and a six port Thunderbolt5/USB-A 3.2 Gen 2 hub for additional connectivity possibilities. Show off all that jacked up brawn in a buff, aircraft-grade aluminum design that nestles perfectly on top or underneath your Mac.
All Gain, No Lag Pain
Powered by advanced Thunderbolt 5 technology, you can use StudioStack to keep pace with the latest Mac Studio computers' internal storage speed:
  • OWC StudioStack - up to 6302 MB/s
  • Mac Studio 2025 (M4 Max, 512GB) - up to 4084 MB/s
  • Mac Studio 2025 (M4 Max, 1TB+) - 6204 MB/s
  • Mac Studio 2025 (M3 Ultra) - 6260 MB/s

Thunderbolt 4, Thunderbolt 3, and USB4
The StudioStack doesn't just bulk up the latest M4 and M3 Mac Studios. You'll greatly reduce lag when you connect the StudioStack to M2 and M1 Mac Studios and M1/M2 minis with Thunderbolt 4, and even older Mac minis with Thunderbolt 3:
  • Thunderbolt 4 host - up to 3200 MB/s
  • Thunderbolt 3 host (Mac only) - up to 2800 MB/s
  • USB4 host - up to 3200 MB/s

Muscle Memory Redefined
Designed to match the sleek physique of the Mac Studio, this mass gainer redefines how to crush storage, connectivity, and display needs by delivering supersized gains in every byte. StudioStack is ideal for:
  • Creative professionals with photo/video/CGI/audio workflows that can take advantage of a dual-drive hybrid storage solution. NVMe SSDs deliver ultra-fast performance for seamless editing, compositing work, and cached 3D simulations, while SATA HDDs provide large amounts of storage for Lightroom libraries, media files, 3D assets, archival footage, inactive projects, and project/file backups.
  • General users who seek to expand their Mac Studio storage and connectivity capabilities while matching the performance and design of their machine.
  • AI engineers and data scientists that need fast storage and large capacity to store and run large LLMs with ease and expand the non-upgradeable storage existing in their Mac Studio.
  • Anyone that wants to add several Thunderbolt displays to a Mac Studio and expand the machine's built-in storage.

Form That Flexes Beyond Today
Engineered to support an NVMe M.2 2280 SSD and an 3.5" SATA hard drive, this compact powerhouse gives you the ultimate flexibility to choose the drive configuration you want today, including blazing fast and highly reliable OWC Aura SSDs with up to an 8TB capacity. When tomorrow's 16TB and larger NVMe SSDs hit the scene, you can easily boost your StudioStack's capacity.
Lift Beyond Your Limit
With StudioStack's three Thunderbolt 5 and three 10 Gb/s USB-A ports, you'll lift the connectivity limit of your Mac mini M1/M2 machine to a new PR. You'll also love how easy and fast the two side-located USB-A ports make plugging in flash drives, card readers, and other frequently used devices instead of blindly fumbling around behind your machine.
Muscle Meets Multi-Use
Accessing your StudioStack Mac formatted volumes on a Windows PC is remarkably easy with the addition of OWC MacDrive. This seamless software (sold separately) runs in the background, so there's nothing to launch or learn. Just connect the StudioStack and not only do you have instant read access, but full write access too. MacDrive also includes powerful features that enable you to format and partition drives as well as repair basic disk issues.
Better Than Plug and Play; It's Plug and Pump Up
OWC products are loved around the world over for their It Just Works ease-of-use and reliability. StudioStack solutions come pre-formatted (APFS/HFS+) so they're ready to plug into your Mac Studio or Mac mini and pump you up with power. OWC's free Drive Guide helps PC users easily reformat for Windows in seconds.
OWC Thunderbolt Cable Included
OWC's StudioStack comes with a certified 11.8" OWC Thunderbolt 5 (USB-C) cable.

OWC StudioStack Reviews

Immediate Improvement in Speed - Purchased March 24, 2026

I purchased an OWC StudioStack with Thunderbolt 5 ports and a 28TB IronWolf Pro HD from B&H last week. (B&H is great, two day free delivery via FedX.) I installed the 28TB drive (OWC help desk said there was no limit on drive size) on arrival and used "SuperDuper" software (which is fantastic by the way) to back up approximately 16.5TB of photos from one of my Lacie 20TB docks with Thunderbolt 4 ports (I have 3 of them for redundancy since giving up on RAID enclosures). It took about 25 hours to complete the back up at an average speed of 180MB/s (according to Superduper... I didn't do the math). I haven't migrated Lightroom to OWC box yet, but after only one day I can report that accessing files on the OWC box and IronWolf drive is nearly instantaneous. Not perceptively slower than on the internal MacStudio 4TB SSD which I generally use only for OS, other application files and miscellaneous documents. File directories pop up and populate in a fraction of a second instead of sometimes 2 to 5 or more seconds when using the external Lacie drives. Obviously, file transfer rates are much slower than an SSD, but the annoying delay to load file directories and locate files is gone. I have had the 2023 MacStudio (also purchased from B&H) for about 2 years which replaced a high end iMac (also purchased from B&H, 7 or 8 years ago) which used a Drobo Raid box (from B&H 10 or 15 years ago) for external photo files. I have been very disappointed by how slow file access has been and knew it wasn't the MacSudio with maxed out Ram etc. that was slow. I should have done this much sooner but took too long looking for a RAID box to replace the long out of production Drobo system. So far the OWC StudioStack rocks. I have never purchased anything made my OWC before, but in this case I will attribute my satisfaction to the Thunderbolt 5 architecture. It also looks great, uses the same footprint as the MacSudio on my desk and the extra ports are a plus. I also installed and initialized a 2TB SSD card (purchased from B&H previously for another device) in the OWC StudioStack but am not currently using that drive. According to OWC the box will accommodate 8TB SSD cards available now and 16TB SSD cards when available. I primarily needed a site for over 16.5 TB of Lightroom files. I haven't decided how or what to use the SSD card slot for yet.
