Solid

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is “solid” SSD from a very reputable company. Very reliable with good warranty. This is M.2 so make sure your computer supports this format. Benchmark results show reading speed of 7080MB/s and write speed of 5890MB/s. Plenty fast for pretty much anything. What I am using this for though, is using as external storage. I put this inside USB4 enclosure. The speed drops to about 3700MB/s, but instead I get a portable storage with huge space. Very happy with this set up. The speed stays fast consistently. I haven’t run across any issues. When you’re thinking to make it into portable storage, make sure to get a good quality enclosure. The enclosure is almost as important as the ssd inside. To sum it up, this ssd is a very fast and reliable, versatile storage option. I couldn’t ask for more.

Good but not outstanding

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] So my setup is a desktop PC, I mainly use it for Steam gaming and watching video. Before this SSD I had two 1TB drive installed, and now I replace both with this single 990 2TB. The install is very easy, just plug in the M.2 slot and format it, took me maybe 10 minute, no issue at all. For everyday use, I mostly download game from Steam, play for a while, get bored, delete it, then download something else, I do this pretty often. The screenshot I attach show me downloading a 15GB game on Steam - network speed around 144-186 Mbps and disk usage show 336.8 Mbps, whole download take about 15 minute. This feel smooth and consistent, no stutter or slowdown during the process, which I appreciate. Compare to my old two 1TB setup the raw speed feel similar for my use case, since Steam download is usually capped by my internet anyway rather than the drive itself. For game loading, I test a few game like loading into map and booting up big title, everything feel fast and responsive. The spec say 7,250 MB/s read speed which is very fast on paper - for casual gaming like mine the bottleneck is more likely somewhere else (like my internet speed), but I can tell the drive itself is running smooth and reliable with zero hiccup so far. One thing I really like is the convenience of having one big 2TB drive instead of managing multiple small one. Before I always need to check which drive have more space before install a new game, sometimes need to move game between drive when one get full. Now everything just go to one place and I dont need to think about it anymore, which make my whole gaming setup much simpler. Samsung also mention a lot of technology feature like thermal control and power efficiency on the product page. My PC temperature stay normal and stable, no weird noise or heat issue at all, so I think these feature is doing their job quietly in the background even if I dont notice it directly as a casual user. Overall this is a solid, reliable product with zero quality issue and I trust Samsung brand a lot. For someone like me who mainly game and watch video, the biggest win is the convenience of one big drive and the peace of mind that everything just work smoothly. Would recommend for anyone looking for a dependable upgrade.
