I assume the camera is wonderful. I'm not a professional photographer. My problem with this camera is that it has so many (great) features that it's hard for me to figure it out which features to use when I want to take a picture. Be advised that as of this writing (September 22, 2026) there is no SONY operator's manual, and none of the existing operator's manual are any good. In time I'm sure some really good manual writers will come out with a good user's manual. So don't go checking Amazon for current literature on this camera; all of the existing "Kindle" user's books are very bad (as of this writing).
* I love the fact that it takes the SONY NP FZ100 (larger; lasts longer) battery.
*I love the "joystick" feature. It's so much nicer than using the display wheel (although anything you want to do is doable with the display wheel as well as the "joystick."
*But be aware that there is no simple HDR setting, as my previous SONY RX10 iv camera has. However, you can set the features up to take "true" HDR pictures. The setting for this is a multiple step process, but it's certainly doable if you know how to do it.
*I don't love the fact that there is no built-in pop up flash. I have many SONY flash units and they work with this camera, but I don't love adding extra space-takers and extra weight in my luggage when I travel.

We use a camera for birding, primarily for identification purposes, and for the occasional glamour shot. We don't want multiple lenses or anything too bulky to lug around all day.
Our previous camera was a Canon Powershot SX70 which had an amazing zoom, but always produced soft images unless the subject was very well lit and very close. The RX10V performs so much better with crisp images in low light and at distance. It's a bit more complicated to set up - the menu is vast - but the learning curve isn't too bad.
The AI bird auto-focus isn't perfect as it often doesn't "see" the bird in the frame. When it does lock onto the bird, it does track well.
For our purposes this really is the perfect camera.

The Sony RX10 V Digital Camera's * setting on the mode dial is the (disabled) setting, which will disable the mode dial allowing users to select the exposure mode using the menu or by recalling a preregistered setting.

Is this camera actually built with a magnesium alloy? I haven't seen Sony advertise that feature at all. I'm concerned about whether its durability is on par with the Alpha series.

The Sony RX10 V Digital Camera is dust and moisture resistant so it is okay for use in light rain but not recommended for a heavy downpour. The body is made of polycarbonate plastic.

The Sony RX10 V Digital Camera has a good stabilization system; however, at the longer reaches of the zoom range and tracking moving subjects, like planes, using the camera on a monopod or tripod rather than handheld would be recommended.

The Sony RX10 V digital camera, compared to the RX10 IV has a Bionz XR processor and an AI processing unit. That allows for subject recognition modes, including birds, animals, cars, planes, and “human pose estimation." It can shoot faster, up to 30 fps, with a blackout-free viewfinder. It also has a speed boost function that lets you temporarily engage a faster (or slower) shooting mode.
Video has been improved, capturing 10-bit and H.265 footage, and it can now shoot 4K/120 with a significant 1.38x crop or oversampled 4K/60 from the full width of the sensor.
It no longer has a built-in flash.
And the other big change is the battery. It uses the larger NP-FZ100 battery.
