Meade 07068 overview

  • 1Description

The Meade Instruments Series 4000 9mm Plossl Wireless Illuminated Reticle Eyepiece is ideal for use with an off-axis guider to more accurately detect and correct tracking errors during long-exposure astrophotography sessions.

It is outfitted with an illuminated concentric-circle/double-crosshair reticle that presents a clearly-defined center aiming area that allows users to center a guide star of virtually any size and closely monitor its location for drift. The reticle has dual micrometric X-Y axis positioning controls to position the reticle just about anywhere in the field of view, and is illuminated by an integrated red LED that is easy to see while preserving night-adjusted vision. Unlike wired models that suffer from cord-wrap and snagging, this eyepiece is a standalone unit that runs on two included LR44 batteries to power the LED, and has a rheostat to set the appropriate brightness for the ambient light or the user's preference. This model is built with a 4-element lens and has a 9mm focal length that produces moderate-to-high magnifications on most OTAs, anti-reflection multi-coated optics to improve views, and a dioptric correction dial for precision focusing. The eyepiece also features a comfortable 16mm eye relief and a fold-down rubber eyecup for easy use with or without eyewear.

    Meade 07068 reviews

Series 4000 9mm Plossl Wireless Illuminated Reticle Eyepiece (1.25") is rated 4.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect! This eyepiece is great quality in an extremely affordable package. The wireless illumination is great, and the brightness is adjustable. The reticle is a double crosshair with two bullseyes in the center. It is clear that you can adjust the alignment of the crosshairs, but what isn't obvious (or mentioned in the documentation) is that you can rotate the top of the eyepiece to bring the crosshairs to perfect focus. I use this for drift alignment and centering stars for the GOTO function of my mount. Great product at a great price!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Functional but maybe get the 26mm Bought this 9mm reticle eyepiece (crosshair for those who speak English) to train the motors (calibrate) on a Meade ETX90 telescope. It has double crosshairs and two concentric circles around their intersection, so you get a tiny square and a couple of circles. Screws on the side can be used to reposition the intersection. With the light off these are nice crisp black lines. With the light on you get thick red stripes. Brightness was not an issue for me. The combination with the ETX90 was only satisfactory for very bright or well-lit objects. This is a very narrow focus range for the ETX90, you may also want to get the other one. ;-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from LED **WAY** too bright As supplied, the eyepiece is virtually unusable for guiding. Even at its lowest setting, the red LED is as bright as a laser pointer. You can use it as a flashlight. So, unless your guide star is brighter than 1st magnitude, you won't be able to see it. So, I ended up using black acrylic paint and a toothpick and carefully painted more and more of the led black. Do this carefully, since you won't be able to get the paint off again. Finally, with about 80% of the led painted black, it is usable. The moveable reticle is a clever idea, and extremely helpful for centering your guide star. The eyepiece comes with no instructions; two of the screws move the reticle, I have no idea what the other two screws do!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for polar alignment Was a bit concerned about the short eye relief, but turns out not to be much of a problem. Being able to move the cross hair is a useful feature for picking different stars or just saving yourself some slewing time to exactly centering a star. Minimum brightness setting is still a bit bright for dim stars, but not so much that I have felt the need to do something about it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Compared to Wired Version I agree with the other reviewers as to quality and functionality. The most important difference for me is that the wireless version does not go as dim as the wired version. At the dimmest setting, the wireless version is still fairly bright, but usable. If you're drift aligning on a very faint star, this may be a problem.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Could have been great Fit and finish of this item was much better than I was expecting and first impressions were very good. The cross hair can be adjusted into very sharp focus which is great. But there are lots of issues with it that seem like they would be easy to fix: * Worthless instructions: there are 5 threaded adjustments and two other threaded parts that are intended to be taken apart, but no useful info on any of it. The instruction sheet says to replace the batteries the same direction as they came out but it does not come with the batteries installed. * As everyone else has mentioned, LED is way to bright. Crazy bright. It is too bright for daylight, let alone at night. I was not able to get the illuminator apart to replace the led or add a resistor, and the trick of wadding a piece of paper in there doesn't work on this item. The description that the lines are visible against dark skies is false, the entire field glows red even on the lowest setting and dark skies are not visible - even assuming you don't have the crosshair image burnt into your vision. * The double cross hair is good to have but the etching is far thicker than necessary and the two circles are also unnecessary. All up, the cross hairs block out much of the view through the eyepiece. * The cross hair X-Y adjustment seems unnecessary to me - it doesn't lock very well so can move and it would be better to just always know that it is centered. * No top cap. Never heard of an eyepiece not having a cap, even with department store scopes. It is a standard size, I have about 5 eyepieces with the correct sized cap, but of course they are in use. All up, I will keep it if I can figure out a solution to the bright LED, mainly because it looks and feels like quality. If buying again though, I would absolutely get something else.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Piece I purchased this 9mm Plossl Eyepiece w/ Cordless Illuminated Reticle (1.25) by Meade after reading all the reviews on this site. I've used it several times now and it is a good piece. Agreed, as other reviews mention, that the light is VERY bright even at the lowest setting which for intent and purpose renders the illuninated reticle almost useless for long-exposure guiding with an off-axis guider. There is a very simple solution I've been using for decades now to take care of the issue. All you have to do is cut three squares of white teflon tape (the same kind you probably already have in the garage used to put on sink faucets to shower head threads so they don't leak. Three layers works well. Just cut the three squares about a half inch or so long and stack them, then place them on the light end of the illumination unit and screw it back on. Done.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A pretty good eyepiece, with cross hairs First, being able to center the cross hairs is extremely convenient. I use this with a flip mirror and adjusting the cross hairs on this is more convenient than centering the mirror on the flip mirror with nearly every use (admittedly I don't baby my flip mirror). This holds it well. That's all well and good. Now for the surprise..... This is a good eyepiece itself! I've found myself on a couple occasions wishing the cross hairs weren't there. I have better eyepieces costing several hundreds each with wide fields sharp to the edge and this does not rival those, however I only expected this as a centering eyepiece with so so images at best like a cheaper reticle I have. These images are quite pleasing and sharp and well corrected the edge of it's industry average field. I like this little guy and I'm happy I bought it. For co It could come with a better box, the reticle dimming mechanism is not too bright for my extremely light polluted area but others might think it rivals the sun, your mileage may vary. If you need this type of reticle, get this, because I'm not aware of competitors. As a bonus, it's pretty good.
