Nikon Mikron CF 7x15 Reviews

Understand the trade-offs made for compactness

I bought this to replace a pair of Leica Ultravid 8x20 BL as my everyday-carry jacket-pocket binoculars. They are very compact, and unlike opera glasses they have a useful 7x magnification. The porro prism is in a reverse configuration, where the objective lenses are more narrowly spaced than the oculars, which reduces 3D separation, but as I have a strong directive eye, it doesn't make that much of a difference. Build quality is excellent (apart from the neck string that you have to knot yourself), and the supplied carrying case is a nice bonus. That said, the focusing wheel is awkwardly placed and very stiff, and takes quite a few revolutions to go from minimum focus distance to infinity. The binocular housing expands as you focus (not internal focusing), which means they are not going to be fully watertight. Eye relief is also inadequate for eyeglass wearers (I have a fairly moderate prescription). Like all small binos, they are not forgiving of poor eye placement. Image quality is decent, but not outstanding given the small aperture. There is noticeable curvature of field, but no chromatic aberrations that I can detect. On paper the 7 degree field of view is more than the 6.6 of the Nikon High Grade 7x15 monocular I also own, but in practice the small eyepiece design and eye relief make the usable FOV smaller. Close-focus distance is decent at 2 meters, but the stiff focusing wheel means these are not going to be a butterfly enthusiast's binoculars of choice. I think these binoculars are great for the purpose I bought them for: a lightweight pair you almost forget you are carrying with you at all times. A monocular can also serve that purpose, including Nikon's excellent High Grade series.

Tiny but not a toy.

I saw these a couple of years ago in Japan. My old binoculars needed replacing. I am a little old lady, I travel a lot, I travel very light. So, these seemed like just the ticket. When they arrived and I figured out which end was which - I was amazed at how good these are. I am heading off across the US and Canada on the train later next month - I'll take the little binoculars and will update this review if any thing comes up that will change my rating.
