Rode NT3 overview

  • 1Description

The NT3 3/4" Cardioid Condenser Microphone from RODE features an end-address, 3/4", gold-sputtered, true-condenser transducer that provides detailed audio capture for almost any instrument. Intended for studio, stage, and location work, the NT3 can be used to capture audio on drums, percussion, acoustic guitar, guitar amps, piano, and all acoustic instruments. The versatile NT3 also works very well for voice reproduction when used as a handheld presentation microphone or indoor boom mic.

This microphone can be powered by either phantom power, or via a 9V battery in situations when power isn't available through a console or camera. The NT3's rugged and durable all-metal body and mesh head ensure it is protected both in the studio, or out in the field. In addition, the NT3's cardioid pickup pattern effectively isolates the source signal, and the output circuitry and diaphragm are manufactured to further minimize noise from radio frequency interference or bad grounding.

    Rode NT3 reviews

NT3 3/4" Cardioid Condenser Microphone is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Microphone! I bought this mic to use for recording indoor dialogue in a low budget indie film production that will soon commence. I have performed several tests with this mic using a Tascam DR-40 Protable Recorder. The sound quality on this thing is amazing! Crisp and clear! The only thing that I can see that people wouldn't like about this mic is probably the weight. At the end of a boom pole it can get tiring after a while, but that doesn't bother me. If you are not using a dedicated preamp with this, you may have to raise the volume a bit in post; however the signal to noise ratio is so good that it wouldn't effect the quality. This is probably the best microphone I've ever purchased for such a low price!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for Indoor Dual Interviews I'm using this microphone to shoot video interviews with two people at once. I position the microphone between them and it's cardioid pattern picks up both of them just fine. Before I got this NT-3 cardioid I was using my NTG-2 shotgun for these interviews and I couldn't get the audio right. Now it's a cinch. I also like that it has an On/Off switch which should help to conserve battery life. The only drawback is that it's bigger and heavier than my shotgun mic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Boom mic for DSLR This microphone sounds great for this price point. I use as a boom mic for interviews with Nikon D7000 and a Tascam DR-60D.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! This is my first mic for my home recording studio. I am just starting out while trying to keep the cost down. After recording a few tracks of acoustic guitar and vocals I could not believe my ears. This mic is unbelievable!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sounds Super A very nice mic. I am not an audiophile but this mic sounds excellent to me. Very low noise and a very high peaking threshold. Outstanding build quality if a bit heavy. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic mic This microphone is a great workhorse mic around the studio. It works great for guitars, drum overheads, vocals, horns, and lots of other things. It is very sensitive so you get a lot of detail, but be careful around loud extra noises. It tends to pick up lots of room noises since it is so sensitve. It also performs very well as a field recording mic in a stereo pair or just mono. That is what I bought this mic for originally but I just keep finding more uses for it. Good buy at a great price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Sound Rode delivers with the NT3, crisp clear audio with low noise. I use it for recording DSLR dialogue and the cardioid pattern means I don't have to be super critical with aiming it. I use Neutrik connectors which do lock into the NT3, just give them a push, for a secure XLR connection. I mount it into an Audio Technica AT8415 shock mount, if it slips a bit in the vertical, I wrap a rubber band around the mic shaft to offer some purchase to the shock mount bands, keeps it secure. 4 stars due to weight, 5 stars for sound.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good boom mic for indoor dialogue but no lock for XLR cable I record indoor dialogue with this cardioid mic via phantom power XLR cable to a Tascam DR-40 digital audio recorder to sync up later in editing because shotgun mics can phase the audio in high reverb rooms, but you have to be careful the XLR cable connector does not come loose because it will not lock into place in this mic. How dumb is that on a pro mic?
