Helping to reduce reflections and glare, the 72mm Linear Polarizer Filter from Hoya filters out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface. By filtering this light, a noticeable increase in the saturation of skies and foliage is possible, as well as the ability to produce clearer imagery when photographing in hazy conditions. The filter is constructed from optical glass and is mounted within a durable, lightweight aluminum ring that has a hard-anodized finish to guard against wear.

A linear polarizer differs from a circular polarizer in that it does not support the use of a camera's autofocus or auto exposure functions; it is best suited for use with manual cameras, such as view cameras, that are not dependent on internal mechanisms to determine focus or metering settings.

Helps to reduce reflections and glare by filtering out light that has become polarized due to reflection from a non-metallic surface.
Polarizing filters arrange, and filter, directionally polarized light perpendicularly to the reflected light, allowing for the absorption of much of the light.
Clears up haze in distant landscapes and provides more saturated, vivid colors.
Strongest effect when used at a 90° angle from the sun.
Optical glass construction maintains image clarity.
Aluminum filter ring is both lightweight and durable and features a hard-anodized finish to guard against scratching and wear.

72mm Linear Polarizer Filter is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 6.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great General Use, Outdoor Filter This polarizer is a fantastic way to cut down unwanted vertical glare on your high light outdoor photography. Since it is a linear polarizer, it allows you to play with the effects while you are shooting. Be careful though, if you are using an autofocus lens, you may have to readjust after each focus. If you are looking for an all around foolproof polarizer, you may want to go with the spherical polarizer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Swivels! It works! Also the polarized effect can be rotated without unthreading the lens. Packaging would be better in a polypropylene case for travel. The rigid plastic is a drag.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Linear+Circular = variable ND to +9stops I purchased this to put in front of a circular polarizer to have a variable ND filter. This is how the much more expensive variable neutral density filters work. Circular polarizers actually are a linear polarizer in front with a quarter wave plate underneath so that after the polarized light that gets through the linear front part, the light is then is unpolarized by the quarter wave plate so as to not give problems with autofocus systems. By putting another linear polarizer in front without the quarter wave plate, the light remains polarized after going through the linear polarizer and the circular polarizer can now adjust how much light will get through to the camera. By crossing the polarizers, almost no light gets through while if both polarizers are in alignment, almost as much light get through as with just one polarizer. Initial tests show it works better than I imagined. With polarizers crossed, it is over a 9 stop ND filter, in the league with the Lee Big Stopper etc. while it also can be dialed back to only a few stops. Plus, you get all the features of a polarized filter. If you need to hold one of the two polarizers in place while rotating only one of them, a small piece of gaffers tape does the trick. I will have to check for color shift, but even that is not too hard to deal with using a white and gray reference card and then digital photo software to readjust the color balance. Do make sure you have a good circular polarizer in back of the linear polarizer. There are some that are made for low-light photography that pass more light through. I suspect these do not have as sharp a polarization cut-off and thus may not be able to give +9 stop ND. Linear polarizers are relatively inexpensive and if you get one as large as you largest circular polarizer, some step-down rings will fit it to your smaller circular polarizers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very good product My original polarizer for this lens was cracked and I knew I needed a new one. I use it when taking pictures of sunsets, or if the sun is very bright throughout the day. It fits my lens well and the pricing on this item was very reasonable. I would recommend it to others. The delivery of the lens was very prompt. Ellen P.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works as expected I had read reviews from others about using this filter along with a circular polarizer to make an inexpensive variable neutral density filter. So I gave it a try and it works great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from works great use it almost all the time as most of my work is on or around water.
